And a stingray not a dangerous animal like a tiger or lion is ? Think again ! Terrible way to go !

Let me see, Crocodile, Great White Shark, Lion, Stingray... I think I'll take me chances with the stingray, Mate.

Irwin's heart may have been in the right place but he was reckless and ended up paying for it with his life. You can only yank on a lion's tail so many times before you get bitten.

According to http://www.nndb.com/people/577/000022511/

On 2 January 2004, Irwin found himself embroiled in public controversy after he engaged in a crocodile feeding demonstration while holding his infant son, then only two months old, in one arm while feeding a chicken carcass to the close up croc with the other. In the same incident he was reported setting the infant on the ground beside a pond with a croc in it. The footage appeared on the nightly news, leading locals to call the Queensland Department of Family Services to complain. The Department later reprimanded Irwin, and even acting Premier Terry Mackenroth felt it necessary to express his "concerns with the footage". While members of the press compared the incident to the notorious Michael Jackson baby-dangling incident, the Irwins remained staunchly defensive of the incident, claiming that Steve was in control of the situation the entire time and that the baby was never in any danger. Eventually however, Irwin did concede that, if he had it all to do over again, he might do things differently.

Meanwhile, several months later, Steve Irwin again came under criticism for his antics involving antarctic wildlife. While filming a documentary Irwin allegedly broke both international and Australian federal laws by coming too close to a pod of whales and even sliding down snowy slopes with a group of penguins. Again Irwin utterly denied any wrongdoing, and, after a careful review of the documentary, officials dropped the charges. However there remain those who claim the "real" story of what happened on location, and thus any condemning evidence, was simply edited out of the footage. The Irwins eventually released their own version of both these incidents in a special Crocodile Hunter documentary, Crocodiles & Controversy.

Despite such controversies, and the embarrassment professed by many of his fellow Australians over his hyperactive high-risk antics and Dundeeish cant, Irwin continues to enjoy tremendous popularity and success, especially in the United States. According to Irwin however, the financial fruits of this success have not gone to fuel a lavish lifestyle, but have been channeled into purchasing tracts of endangered habitat to be set aside for wildlife conservation.

Or as one reviewer on Amazon put it...

" I would strongly advise teachers and parents to look elsewhere than in any of the Steve Irwin "Crocodile Hunter" series. As a retired biologist and natural historian, I tell you this man and his colleagues are a menace. This video, "Crocodiles of the Revolution" catches some of the most irreponsible and cruel animal "documentaries" I have seen. Our male co-host is a "showboater" and huckster who cares far more about creating lively footage than in being humane to the animals. It is the handling of the second, male, crocodile that is simply beyond the pale. It is done in an utterly irresponsible fashion, with well over a hundred laughing, excited people around to further render the "croc's" move a semi-donnybrook. Good action scenes, but stupid, dangerous animal handling. The risk here is that young people will think this is a proper way to go about handling and moving animals. There are many other great nature series for kids. To learn and be entertained, kids deserve intelligent documentaries just like adults."

I didn,t watch it much but guys like this don,t show up often,so he will be missed. At least he died doing what he loved, probably not a lot of us will have the same fate. Not that being stung to death by a stingray at 44 is joyous, but I,d rather that than laying in my death bed at 85 with belts, pins, hoses and wires hooked up to me.

Regardless of whatever reckless acts he did - I appreciate that he fostered a love of wildlife, and put his money where his mouth was.

I mentioned earlier that I never found his antics to be cruel & maybe I was hasty about that, but there's a difference between elicting a defensive reaction in an animal and showboating one on some talk show while the audience freaks it out. I've also seen other "animal experts" slap, nearly choke and use hooks & sticks on different animals. I never saw Steve Irwin do something like that. Granted I didn't always like what he did - pulling tails, pissing off snakes, etc. but I always respected him in a big way - it makes me really sad.

I don't have anything unique to say, but I'll miss his show and enthusiasm. Once he started branching out from crocodiles and native Australian poisonous snakes, I didn't think he respected the animals enough, especially the Komodo dragons and sea snakes. Best wishes to Terri and his children.

Damn, this is some way to come back from vacation. Irwin's enthusiasm was the most genuine I've ever seen in any nature show and because of him, made the subject matter undeniably appealing to audiences, even those who would'nt have otherwise have been interested in it. He was young and with young children.....what a tragedy.

Hey DJ Craig, I don't know how mundane a way death by stingray really is. Very little is known about their terrible toxin which basically works immediately to stop your circulation.Their barb, which is like a a dirty dagger, right through the heart, injecting this poison, is one terrible death if you ask me. And no antidote exists [V] [V] [V] [V] [V]

I'm wondering how the hell it got him. It lays flat. Did he fall on the barb? Can it thrust up?

I think a lot of his "popularity" can be attributed to the "Jackass" effect. People watched not so much for educational purposes but to see him take risks and possibly get hurt. His mugging for the camera and feigned, overenthusiastic bombast made him a cartoonish parody. I don't need a performing clown to capture my interest in nature. Why Irwin felt the need to constantly "steal the show" is beyond me.

While I never claimed his death was mundane, it was completely avoidable and if the past is any indication, may have been due to his own careless behavior.

At least he didn't have his baby in the other hand when it happened.

Wow, I'm sensing alot of negative energy on your part towards the Croc Hunter. Dude! You must chill! Do you really think people watched in wait to see if he'd get hurt? I don't know about that. Do you have any scientific poll data or the like? Support your theory.

I actually thought his show was interesting, certainly educational, and never watched to see him get hurt. In fact, at times I switched channels because a snake he was handling looked too close to him and I didn't want to see him get bitten. Of course, these shows being taped, I could have figured he didn't get bitten or it would have been on the news and would likely have not been on the program as such. Still, I had to flip channels sometimes just because those snakes damn near scared me good.

Stingrays are usually pretty docile from what I have read, but there must have been maybe a movement on his part that startled this one, and it's barb was more defensive than actually trying to attack him. Such a freak thing, to actually get him right through the heart.

Sad to see this happen, and sure his family is feeling it horribly at this time.

He was a great lover of animals and quite a character.
I haven't watched his show in a while but I always respected what he did. RIP.[V]

Nah, I just think the DJ is trying to light a fire and piss people off. Just avoid his absolutely ridiculous comments and move on. Steve will be missed, my son loved him as did many other children all over the world. Making light of somebody dying isn't really funny and comparing a dead man's wife to Mindy while the body is still warm lacks a degree of taste. But I guess some people think everything is supposed to be funny so they try to stir things up.
