I've seen some depressing movies in my time. Probably "Testament" about a monther watching the people she love all die from radiation poisoning after a nuclear war is still the overall "winner". However I saw "The Assassination of Richard Nixon" last night. About an honest guy who has his entire life completely fall apart and decides to be remembered for hijacking a plane into the White House (in itself, kinda creepy). This actually occured in 1974. He of course was stopped and killed in the airport and today no one even remembers who he is.

Not to belabor a morbid subject, but any "favorite" depressing movies out there?[:(]

Bela Tarr's [i]Satantango[/i] is fairly depressing. It's 7.5 hours of depressing, to be exact. This movie will finally see a dvd release this year from Facets Multimedia.

Depressing movie I like or just crap depressing movie? There's plenty of the latter like [i]Requiem for a Dream[/i]. If the former, I dig [i]Barfly[/i]. Depressing, yes, but it also has some hilarous lines...

- So you hired a dick to find an asshole...

- Are you Henry Chinaski? [to a bloodied Micky Rourk]
- No, I'm Leon Spinks!

- I thought it was love.
- Baby, what we had was just green corn.

- Why did it have to be Eddie? He symbolizes everything that disgusts me. Obviousness, unoriginal macho energy, ladies man....

- In the guest house, you could write in peace...
- Nobody who could write worth a damn could ever write in peace.

[PS. The most depressing music video I've ever seen is the Smashing Pumpkins [i]Try Try Try[/i]. Pregnant junkie girl, junkie boyfriend, boozing, shooting up, whoring, puking up cum, bloody miscarriage, dream sequence of a suburban idyl that turns into a vomitous, suicidal, murderous rampage...all set to a curshingly yearning soundtrack. Its 5 minutes of raw desperation is more depressing than any movie I've ever seen. It's great! [:D] ]

Oh my freakin' GOD! How I hated [i]Requiem For A Dream[/i]! It's only redeeming value comes by way of the end when Marion turned into a crackwhore. Funniest like: "ASS-2-ASS"[8D] It was beautiful!

Along the lines of Testament is the animated film When the Wind Blows.
I'd also include Less Than Zero. Not too much happiness there.

me too.

Last week I threw in "Of Mice And Men", Gary Sinise / John Malkovitch version.
The week before that we watched "The Elephant Man".
But these were not as depressing as "Grave Of The Fireflies", which we watched several weeks ago.

P.S. in the music video category, Metallica's "One" always gets me down.

Last Exit to Brooklyn was a really depressing movie. Jennifer Jason Leigh had a thing for a while where she was a weird character in every movie.

There was that something-something Dollhouse movie (Welcome to the Dollhouse?) about the little girl who everybody hated. That movie set me in a funk for a good week.

Welcome to the dollhouse- WEENER DOG! They called her weener dog. That one was dark. Loved requium for a dream and it depressed me for a long time.

Northfork, directed by Michael Polish. Astounding performances by both James Woods and Nick Nolte. Probably the most symbolic film I've ever seen. Marvelous cinemtagrophy. Love this film [|)]

Leaving Las Vegas with Nicolas Cage and Elisabeth Shue. With Cage drinking himself to death and making Shue promise not to stop him, this movie was so depressing that I wanted to shoot him myself just to get it over with!

Threads, a BBC production. Horrible statistics (86% of all life will perish in the first 12 hours of a nuclear strike and half the remaining life after another 12)flash on the screen in between scenes of desolation after a nuclear war.

On the Beach really stuck it to me as well.
