Any fans here for this Dutch new wave group? At first I thought I was listening to The Cure but they have a distinct sound.

One of my best discoveries ever - first heard them about 1986, and have scooped everything they released ever since. Absolutely phenomenal group. And for any fan of the Cure style of music, The Essence are essential.

I have only The Purity album, maybe I will take a second look at the band.[:)]

They have a Best Of album/CD out called 'Dancing in the rain' (1994). Check amazon.com at http://www.amazon.com/Dancing-Rain-Best ... B000006YJS

The only song I've heard from them is THE AFTERWORLD, which I really like a lot. I have to check out the cd. Thanks for the info D J Dennis.

Anything by The Essence is just phenomenal in my opinion. I've kept up with them since about 1986 and think I've managed to get everything by them - certainly all the CD's and the best of, and CD singles with extra tracks as well. Never heard one song by them that I thought was even average.

They're given particularly short shrift on AMG. The band overview is fine (Sutton), but the album ones are just repetitive drivel - okay, we know, they sound like the Cure - but that doesn't mean they don't have several fabulous songs that are often dreamier and more ethereal than even Ole' Bob's, "Everything" and "Out of Grace" for example.

I first heard THE ESSENCE on NU107's radio show"THE GROOVE NATION SESSSIONS" hosted by DJ TOTI and I already liked them![8D] I have THE BEST OF CD which is totally an awesome collection. Though, I bought the "PURITY" VINYL RECORD, I'm still interested to buy the "ECTASY" VINYL RECORD![;)] EXCELLENT BAND!![^]

I remember requesting to review the Essence's albums at AMG several times, only to be shot down because somebody had beaten me to them [:(!]

Thanx, I was going to buy the 3 albums on Amazon.jp but since they are available on Amazon.com, I placed my order with them.
Most songs of Dancing In the Rain come from the albums Purity,A Monument of Trust and Ecstasy/ Nothing Lasts Forever except In your Heart,Time, U 4 Life.I wonder where they come from?

They are a Dutch band and still going strong after these years. The official website can be found on http://www.theessence.be/ (yes, .be, not .nl. I guess the .nl site was already in use). I had the privilige of having them playing at my club twice, once as The Essence and another time with The Cureheads on a The Cure fan meeting playing a mix of both The Essence songs and The Cure covers. I was told that, since they are so sick of being reminded they sound like The Cure, that that was a very very very special event.... and I was there ( YEAH!!!) [:D]
