For fairly depressing concepts done exceptionally well on celluloid you can't go past "Unforgiven", a film where absolutely no one is innocent or righteous, and that is saying something as the ensemble cast is huge. You have vengeful whores, mercenary, murderous heros, heartless pimps, pathetic, moronic deputies, racist bounty hunters, and a cold vicious sheriff. Surrounding these active protagonists are a host self serving miscreants and lowlifes. A great film and a realistic portrayal of the theory that every motivation and action is to benefit ones self.

"21 Grams" is my pick for most depressing, but I really loved it. Can't wait to see the director's next flick, "Babel."

And whomever mentioned Gael Garcia Bernal gets a big old "YES!!" from me. That dude smolders on screen.

"Bastard Out of Carolina" has to be the most depressing movie I've ever seen. That movie was seriously messed up.

You're right about Bastard Out of Carolina. How much abuse can you watch? It's a pretty profound & intense statement on domestic & child abuse, but I could never watch it again.

I read Mysterious Skin & absolutely hated it. I think I kept reading just to see what the deal was. There was no point in seeing the movie. It was also directed by someone who I really dislike.

Before I even knew what it was about, I picked up that book "Running With Scissors." I threw it in the corner in a fit of disgust. Then I picked it up again, feeling guilty that this is the account of some guy's childhood, so I sould have been a little more compassionate. So I threw the book away. It's taken me a couple of years to try to forget all about it.

And, then, what should be made into a movie? Just the thought depresses me.

That movie with Sally Fields playing the girl with like 20 personalities. Cybil I think? I saw part as a kid! Why my parents let me see a mother torturing her own child I will never understand. But they still run that movie all the time and I still can't watch it.

[i]A Child Called It[/i]-----hope they NEVER make a movie about this. The. Most. Depressing. Book. Ever. I couldn't even make it past the second page. As MAS said, I wanted to throw it into the corner in disgust. But this book is HUGELY popular !

Can't recall the most depressing in my entire life but at least for the past year it must have been The Plague. It depressed me so because it was a fookin' waste of time.
