Why have jails at all? This asshat gets to choose his sentence? WTF!!

http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/s ... TopStories

The alternative sentence was one year of being a 'love toy' in a U.S. prison.

His wife and children must be so proud.

I liked this part from the article: "We'll take any available steps to ensure the safety of our citizens and children, including asking the police and federal authorities for assistance." (Brendan Crawley, a spokesman for the attorney general's office in Ontario)

So, how is letting him serve probation in Canada ensuring safety of children there? If this crime happened on U.S. soil, then he needs to reap the consequences of U.S. law. I think he would be the crown jewel at Bendover Prison.

Brings to mind a guy named Charles Ng:

Man, the fight that went on here over him...how can we send this poor soul back to the U.S. where he will certainly be put to death? We need to show that Canada is compassionate. We have too many misguided dunderheads here.

That's about as lenient of a sentence he would get if he was a female teacher, same crime. Sooooo.. I guess the sentencing was on par?

The sentence is without doubt lenient: what irks me is the fact he has any say in the nature of his sentence.
"We have to look at whether this person is a danger to Canada," said Green. "It appears that a judge in the United States doesn't seem to think so."
Neither do I. A 15-year-old (particularly an apparently slutty one) isn't a "child." I'm more offended by the conflict of interest and the adultery than the age difference. If the age of consent in Canada is 14, he should have saved himself the trouble and gone a little north of the border to begin with.

Defendants get to choose their sentences all the time. It's called plea bargaining.

That's a helluva plea bargain...basically let off the hook. The guy should have to spend at least one month in the Ass Spread Inn.

So, basically, one can fiddle around with an underage girl and the authorities are all "hmmm...whatever." But show a dog some lovin' and then it's a felony.

Sing it with me now: God bless the USA!

Did I misread that article? He was getting probation anyway, correct? You're Canadian. Would he have even been on the hook in the first place if he was making out with her there? You'd think the U.S. would be happy to be rid of him, since the very notion that teenagers might actually have sex drives is something that's verboten in this country.

This doesn't belie how laughable it is to want to be closer to his wife after he was caught cheating on her. Unless they're Mormon. And even then.

Not sure if the article mentioned it but if he stayed in the U.S. his sentence was one year.

My guess is he would have done some jail time here...the ususal routine is you serve a portion of your sentence then get it reduced for good behavior. Good behavior here is anything this side of Hannibal Lechter.

Ah, that's different.
In Canada, the age of consent is 14 years unless sex occurs during a relationship of trust or dependency - such as in a teacher-student relationship - in which case the age of consent rises to 18.
Disregard what I wrote about that, too. The original article I read certainly didn't touch on this. (No pun intended.)

I agree then. He shouldn't have been exiled, and the judge shouldn't have given him that choice. This is putting aside my feelings on how the age of consent is a little bit older than it ought to be.
