Looking for 7" Singles Versions

Postby skinnytie » Mon Nov 06, 2006 12:19 pm

I need your help, gang. It seems my own research and foraging isn't getting me anywhere. Does anyone know if the 7" versions of the following songs ever saw the light of day on CD? If so, which CD did they appear on?:

"We Live So Fast" by Heaven 17 (from the b-side to "Temptation")
"When It Started to Begin" by Nick Heyward (the beginning of the song is done differently, and the backing vocalists help with it as well)
"The Telephone Always Rings" by Fun Boy Three (had a horn section)
"Close to Me" by the Cure (also had a horn section)

I was hoping the Cure song would be on the remastered 2-disc set of "Head on the Door", but it didn't look like it made it on there to me. Any help would be appreciated, thanks! I always thought these singles versions were better than the album versions.

We Live So Fast is here:

http://www.amazon.com/Luxury-Gap-Heaven ... F8&s=music
not sure if it is a different version to the b-side

?Close to Me isn't on the Head on the Door?? How can that possibly be? It was on the original cd! Have you listened to the entire cd? What song is track #7 on cd1? It is Close To Me on the original cd.

Is the version of "Close to Me" you're looking for the same one included on the Staring at the Sea: The Singles compilation?

That version contains the horns missing from that on Head on the Door.

schwenko: "Close to Me" is indeed on "Head on the Door", but the 7" single version is different than that (album) version. All the songs I listed are where albums versions all differed from the 7" singles versions. And when I get around to getting the remastered edition of "The Luxury Gap", I'll find out then if it's the version I'm looking for; I'm hoping someone around here knows for sure.

BigBri: Thanks! I'll have to check out that CD! One down, three to go! [:D]

The horn version of Close to Me is on the Galore compilation. It's even on Itunes.

'The Luxury Gap' Remaster has the same version of 'We live so fast' as the previous CD editions, which afaik is the same as the 7" version. Of course, I am never 100% sure of these things[:D]

btw I've always wondered if 'Close To Me' extended version has ever been released on CD. The horn section on that version is even bigger..

Thanks for the help, yipyipcoyote, but I know for sure that the album version of "We Live So Fast" is different than what was on the 7". Unless you're talking about the remix version that appears on the remaster as a bonus track?

You're right Skinnytie. According to www.thomas-overbeck.de/Heaven17/ 'We live so fast' was released as a b-side to Temptation in the UK, but came out as an A-side in the US (b/w The Best Kept Secret), although there is no mention of any US remix and the track timing is similar. I haven't heard the US single so I can't confirm any difference.

The bonus tracks on the 2006 Luxury Gap Remaster :

10. Let Me Go [Extended Mix] (previously available)
11. Who'll Stop the Rain [Dub] (unfortunately mislabelled - this is not the dub but in fact the Extended Version on Temptation 12" and CD3")
12. Crushed by the Wheels of Industry, Pts. 1 and 2 (first time on CD at this length - maybe an edit of the 12-minute+ UK 12"?)
13. Come Live with Me [12" Version] (previously available)

IMO they have not dug deep enough into the archives to include rare vinyl-only material, much the same problem with the Yello reissues.

Is this what you are looking for ?
We Live So Fast (Short Version) (3:50)

It's the flip side to the Temptation 12"

I checked my own 7" single of the song in question, and the time is the same as the one you mention, and since it's the b-side of the 12" as well, I would assume that it is the same version on both. Anyone ever come across a 3:50 long version of this song on CD yet? [:)]

It never fails to amaze me how much everyone out there still knows their stuff when it comes to these things! Thanks much for all your input so far!

from the Heaven 17 web site forum (discussing the re-issued Luxury Gap)

"A shame they couldnt have included the version of We Live So Fast from the b-side of Temptation, so much better than the album version."

FWIW my Caroline release of The Luxury Gap has a 3:47 version of WLSF

With all the info that has been gathered here so far, I think it's safe to make an educated guess : the 7" version of WLSF (3:50) is an edit of the 12" version (6:01) which has the extra synth and percussive effects. Yes, IMO it is superior to the album version.

While it is unclear whether the short version has been released on CD, the 12" version can be found on Temptation CD3" and in a slightly modified form on 'Endless'

I'll have to be on the lookout for that Temptation CD3 disc; the other one you mentioned sounds like a remix (is it?). I never heard the extended version of "We Live So Fast", but just from the opening of it, it would be easy to tell if it was an extended version based on the one on the 7". I do have the same Caroline copy that schwenko does, so I know it's not the same as what was on the b-side of "Temptation". Thanks again, guys and gals!
