Baristas with attitude

Fuck I hate Starbucks employees. What is it with these snot-nosed, body-pierced, disheveled-haired, know-it-all, art-school-drop-out baristas that gives them such attitude?

Its bad enough that thanks to Starbucks, you can't buy a coffee ANYWHERE in this city for under 2 bucks. Then "tip jars" started to appear here and there and everywhere. Now it seems like if you don't drop your dime of change into the tip jar, you are treated like a fucking maggot!

These days I just buy straight up black coffee - none of these foo foo drinks. The guy takes my money, pours the coffee into a recylcable cup and gives it to me. For this he deserves a tip?

Well, I will disagree. I am a regular at a couple of Starbucks and the employees know my name, know my drink, etc., and they're always very nice, no attitude (and this is not just hometown boosterism). And--I never tip at Starbucks; I think tipping should be just for table service.

I will say this about their attire policies, though. One of the guys at my neighborhood place always had a large (2" x 2") adhesive bandage or an Ace bandage on his forearm. Eventually I realized (yes, I'm slow) that Starbucks must require their folks to cover up their tattoos. I would rather see a tattoo than speculate that someone who's serving me food and beverages has a giant oozing unhealing sore.

My experience is the same as Hexicons. Maybe because the corporate headquarters is so close [?] What zill described is what I experience when I go to one of the independent coffee houses (where the real artzy fartzy types hang out). The independent places are way too slow at getting me my cofee, how dare they assume I'm not in a hurry [}:)]

Anyway, I hear ya with the attitudes. I have a diner up the block from my house and I will never go there because of the way they treat you. I go farther to a great one that treats me like a king.

By law, there's a Tim Horton's every 50 feet in Canada, how is it you managed to find yourself at a Starbucks anyway?

No attitude at the Horton's, well, at least in a language you can understand. And a large is $1.40.

Use the tip jar to make change...give a little attitude back to them zill.

What is funny is there is a similar thread on another forum. Basically it is the same consensus. Hate the overbrewed, over roasted, attitude employes. Some preffered DD to Caribou to even Mc Donalds.

I hear what you're saying but unlike the NORMAL part of Canada (all of Canada east of Commercial Drive) there aren't many Tim's around. The only one near me is in an Esso gas station, and well, its just not the same. And you know what? Even though at the gas station I can pour my own, they still have a tip jar! WTF!

McDonnalds was always famous for there weak burned coffee. Not anymore. Got their new stuff the other day and it was not half bad.

I bet Quebec doesn't have Starbucks. I bet they have Le Pew De pew or some shit.

I like Starbucks and regularly drop by there, but no tipping. Dumping ice, milk, caramel and coffee into a cup is not tip-worthy service, IMO.

I resisted Starbucks for many years. I used to be part-owner of a coffee-roasting business. We had the best coffee around. We did lots of mail order. All the coffeeshop owners were pals and all supported each other, and Starbucks appeared on the horizon as a corporate enemy. I also treasured the whole neighborhood coffeeshop scene...all the freaks, hipsters, aspiring poets and folk singers, weirdos, starving students, and University professors...it was all intriguing and colorful.

Well, 6 years ago we moved to another part of town that had no "friendly little neighborhood coffee shops". Plus, there are like 3 Starbucks right next to my school where I work. I began getting Starbucks gift cards from my students and colleagues. Eventually, I caved in. I go twice a week as a treat (not always with a gift card, heh). I still feel guilty about it. But their coffee is really really good (I buy beans sometimes). Very good quality, from a former coffee roaster's point of view. I never get an attitude from those workers. I only go a couple days a week, but they know my name and how I like my chai latte (venti, with extra Chai).

I still miss the small funky coffeeshop scene, and when I travel, or if I'm in our older section of town, I always hit them. Those are coffee drinks made with [i]Soul[/i]. I always feel like my chai latte purchase actually helps the kid behind the counter pay his electric bill that month! Go figure.
