I was listening to Red Rockers classic "China" last night. I forgot I cool the guitar is on that, especially the solo about 2/3s of the way thru the song. I guess it's more of an interlude than a solo, but it's nifty work regardless. Cool progressions, great hook.

I couldn't agree more. Scott was VERY underappreciated. So was Farndon and Chambers for that matter. Chrissie Hynde was such a presence that it was easy to overlook just what a great band they were musically. I always loved the simplicity of the arrangements. They HAD to be good, because there wasn't anything for them to hide behind sonically.

Check out the live version of "Kid" from their 1981 Santa Monica show. Great lead guitar! It's even mo betta than the original I think. It has recently been made available on the rereleased Pretenders debut album. I know iTunes has it.

Gotta agree with the Talking Heads, Police, and Knack tracks.. all brilliant tours de force.

However the following lesser known tracks all feature great guitar work (though not all necessarily 'solo') yet still deserve honorable mention:

A memorable guitar performance can be heard on Gene Loves Jezebel's '20 Killer Hurts' (sorta reminiscent of the late great Stevie Ray Vaughan IMO).

Which also calls to mind SRV's kickin licks on Bowie's LP version of 'Cat People' (Putting Out Fire)

A simple yet driving Celtic infused guitar riff that always hooked me came by way of the late Stuart Adamson and Bruce Watson on Big Country's 'In A Big Country.

I never knew someone could coax such a rousing anthemic bagpipe sound from a guitar (Courtesy of a MXR Pitch Transposer 129 Guitar Effect) hmm.. that's how they supposedly did it (and I'm no fan of bagpipes mind you)

Same kudos for Jamie West-Oram's fabulous stylings on the seldom heard guitar solo on the extended version of The Fixx's 'Secret Separation'

And on an acoustic note, who can forget the haunting Flamenco inspired strains on The Damned's 'Alone Again Or'?

Or last but not least, the bluesy atmospheric rendition of Hendrix's 'Little Wing' on Sting's 'Nothing Like The Sun' is nothing short of (((Gorgeous)))

James Honeymoon Scott of the Pretenders was always really inventive. In addition to the above mentioned live track, check the solos on "Private Life" and "The Adultress" off Pretenders I and II, respectively. Also agree with the above post regarding Big Country; totally underrated guitar duo in that band...there are many good solos to be had if you catch any of their live shows on CD or DVD.

Phil Manzenara of Roxy Music also laid down some pretty cool solos on later "new wave era" Roxy Music, such as "My Only Love". Oh, and Johnny Marr's mid-80's work with Bryan Ferry on his Bette Noir album is chock full of cool solos!

Twist (Tones On Tail) is the first new wave guitar driven song that comes to mind.

I agree Paul Renolds guitar solo in "I Ran" is representative of everything that was so spectacular about the 80's New Wave scene. It may not have been the most difficult but it was by far the best. IMHO [8D]
