I was on an Amtrak coming from DC once and there was this guy who was not just talking but practically yelling into his cel phone. After about an hour, several people telling him to shut up and one guy even leaning over into his face to tell him how rude he was, he still did not stop until he was good and ready. Finally, I say - *whew*. But he starts up again after a short while and this time it was me who waited a good fifteen minutes before I interupted him and asked if he was going to be much longer. After some obnoxious retort I decided to express my disatisfaction at the next level. Did I mention this prick was sitting next to me? I took his phone from his ear, put it on the folding table in front of him and poured his coffee onto it and his lap. What are you gonna do about that, I asked. Trembling, he picked up the phone and told the person he was talking to that I was an "asshole" and continued, coffee dripping down his phone, his face, everything - he was a mess. I still don't know what he was trying to prove. I laughed and told myself it was'nt worth it - I was beyond ready to injure him but it most surely would have resulted in my arrest. So I just found the nearest conducter and told him the situation. He then went onto the intercom and gave an extended lecture on cel phone etiquette and reminded the passengers of Amtrak's low tolerance for cel phone offenses. At that point this prick figured the jig was up and spent the next couple of hours sitting in coffee and thoroughly distracted to be sitting next to me [:D]

After reading those two accounts, I believe I might be a misplaced American.

I'm impressed that the guy's cell phone worked after the coffee. I've had one fritz because it got wet in the rain.

Yeah, I always wondered about that. I can't imagine that the phone worked too much after that. It might have taken a little time for the liquid to seep into the sensitive parts. And dude, come on down to the U.S. anytime!

I seem to be, well, a bit too forward for most people in Canada. Canadians like to think of themselves as a bit more reserved than Americans, they equate it with being refined: I equate it with being afraid to make a scene and general stuffiness.

But I think I'll steer clear of Arizona, I hear those moonlit highways are full of speeding maniacs.

I'm quickly learning that Marie. I normally cut to the chase in these matters, but according to those who are supposedly more "academically inclined",(school staff) that amounts to overreaction. So I decided to let the process unfold...a bad mistake I will not be making again.

I feel like shit for telling my daughter to be patient, and for convincing her to let the school handle it.

Maybe it wouldn't be bad for your daughter to take some karate lessons and change her mentality... don't expect a lot from her teachers or school and even less from those bully boys' and girls' parents (they'll probably be even worse than their children).
These bully children are usually cowards that only act when they're in a grup and against those who they know are weaker than them.
These situations make me really angry [:(!] and there seems to be more and more cases everyday [V]

Both of my kids are in karate, (she has her orange belt, and can break boards with her feet. but not with her hands yet) but their sensei has instilled in them that they should always try to talk their way out of situations before resorting to using karate. She, unlike me, is very soft spoken and docile, so it's not in her nature to be aggressive.

I've told her to use her judgment and if she feels threatened, she should drop one of them, chances are good that the rest will run like cockroaches. But she'd never do that, she's far too nice.

I've sometimes heard it said that Canadians are simply Americans with healthcare but without guns. But there's more to it than that. I agree with the quote, Blir, we are generally a boring, leaderless country where we don't take any action that might upset absolutely anyone, anywhere.

I got upset last week when some bozo tried to butt in a long line at Blockbuster. By simply raising my voice and telling him to go to the back of the line, I had the manager on my ass telling me to calm down. WTF?

Having said all that, when I lived in the UK it was great because everyone thought I was American, and therefore expected me to be and accepted me as "the rude, obnoxious Yankee wanker". Whoohoo!
