Okay, found this ridiculous reference on the World in Motion web page:

Oswald was later shot by his boss (don't know his name) for doing such a bad job and causing his hit-man business to go bust.<<

I'm still not getting it though. Neither Jackie, John, nor Marilyn had January birthdays (May, June, and July). Is the Jackie speaking as if she had actually been killed? (but then she could hang out with the guy from Love Vigilantes!) Or is this just a mind-f*&k by Bernard?!

I go with the "he's dead and returning as a ghost" theory. That's how I read the lyrics.

The song dates from the Falkland Islands war, when England fought Argentina for control of the islands. I assumed that was the inspiration.

No, a telegram indeed. It's got to be all official and such. A phone call would'nt be proper. That's how families are notified of the death of their loved ones who serve. By telegram. Darn good research there btw on the Falklands - excellent! I still think it's the spirit of the doomed soldier returning home who does'nt know he's dead. Until he sees the telegram. God, the imagery is so jarring! It still moves me, even to this day.

Ok Falklands it is. That ware was unpopular at home and abroad for the Brits...so hence the anti-war sentiment.

If it is anti-war then surely he returns as a ghost no? Other wise the song is upbeat...right?

But couldn't it still be all such a terrible mistake. A song about being at war and longing for your family and loved ones? Your mind playing tricks on you etc...
