Data Recovery

Has anyone had experience with Data Recovery? Was it extrememly expensive? Worthwhile?

My external hard drive appears to have died a sudden death and obviously, like an idiot, I didn't back up most of my mp3s. I suppose the harshest lessons in life are learned first hand aren't they?[V]

(I have most of my music in one format or another - cds, albums, etc. - I just don't want to have go back & spend a few months converting it to mp3 again.)

Hey Wolvie, you might try hooking up the HD to another computer and see if you can salvage any of the files that way. It's worked for me before. Otherwise, e-mail me and I have some other thoughts.

Definitely try hooking it up as a slave drive into another computer first. I had a non-boot scare that paid off this way. Don't continue trying to boot from the drive that's giving you a problem. Access is as little as possible when you first realize you can't boot from it.

I know there are some data recovery software out there that retails for under 50 bucks, but I haven't used any of it, so I couldn't tell you. The professional recovery services ARE extremely expensive, by all accounts.

Thanks SS & Coop - I tried hooking it up to another computer, same story - no response, it wants me to format the drive, which I know not to do.

Yeah, definitely don't do that!

I can't vouch for any of those, but those are supposed to be the top recovery softwares on the market. I have heard good things about Recover Lost Data.

Wolvie, does the external have other connectors? In other words, is it a combo USB/Firewire/SATA drive of some sort? I've had it where one controller goes down but another one works fine. If it's only a USB, I'd try another cable too. Make sure the drive is on first then connect to the computer...this should be standard procedure with any USB or Firewire device.
