I'd go with ugly.
People will recoil in horror either way, but at least if I'm ugly, have a good attitude, and my name is Freshbottom Jones I'd probably still have friends who were also ugly and maybe even find love with an ugly woman.
Who wants to be anywhere near Poopypants McGillicuddy?
