BTW, my kids always crack up in church whenever they say "righteous". Then they get me laughing too. And forget about it when the guy sings in that high operatic voice and starts making funny faces. Then if they mention abortion or any politics whatsoever, my wife starts rolling her eyes and firing laser beams at the speaker. Then I get all huffy and agitated if the priest reads off his notes on the sermon. I can't stand half-assed performances...if you're really doing it for God, that's so fucking weak! I'm sure the old ladies around us hate us.

I guess it's more like our weekly family philosophy and spirituality analysis outing. There's certainly some good juice in there, but I'm glad the kids also know they gotta filter the pulp, from me or anybody else.

Yes, love that one.
There should be a thread where we name songs that sing praise. Not only to "The J man" but to other higher powers as well. Lets say spiritually uplifting songs like "Spirit in the Sky" Love it, Love it.

Motors would have to refrain from listing any satanic songs, although now that I think of it, I dont think Motors believes in satan ehither. Sorry Motors.

I'm glad to read your post, Blir. To me, religion is a beautifully symbolic and poetic way to frame out a moral structure couched in ritualistic tradition and I do find that rather groovy. To each their own...much of what religion we choose has to do with culture so who is anyone to say which is "better"? And it is this that gets on many a person's nerve - believers and atheists alike. Then you have those that demand you do as they say, not as they do...the worst kind of preachers. But I must say, you make a very salient point: you really need to dig to take what you need from religion because there really is such alot of crap spouted from a whole hell of alot of half-brains that unfortunately are the ones used in negative stereotyping. Which leads to a point that I'd like to make...why say anything at all? Just [b]be[/b]. Religion is such a personal and subjective thing...if I may speak to NuWaveRX's point about it confounding reason. In the end, it's only between you and God.....but only if you want.

That's just my point, Marv. If something is a proven fact, faith is unnecessary. But a tenet of many, if not most religions, if the belief in something that cannot be (currently) proven. Logic and the scientific method are as unnecessary in that arena. It is between me an God. And I pride myself on keeping that relationship private.

Born Jewish (i.e. my parents both were). In general, I'm agnostic-- and skeptical of practically all organized religions and cults.
I am one of those optimistic types that think that in all of our beliefs we got a splinter of the concept. And I respect all who believe as long as they do not have or claim superiority over others.

I do attend and respect friends' and families' events--my own family is predominantly Jewish (conservative, reform, orthodox, depending) and my stepfamily are Catholic and Lutheran (though mostly secular).

As for conceiving God--I believe that there's probably an underlying force (I know that sounds too Star Wars which is not what I intend). The difficulty is trying to personify it and explain it.

I was raised in a somewhat devout Lutheran family. My parents had so little when my siblings and I were younger that they took great comfort in the church. Religion seemed to offer them some sort of solace. I was never a believer and in my younger years I suppose I was rather irritated and openly resentful towards them for their devotion to something that I saw as a fantasy.

I am still an athiest (used to be a gen-u-ine card carrying one as well, in league with SATAN herself - Madalyn Murray O'Hair). However, as I got older I gradually came to [i]appreciate[/i] the comfort that religion brought my parents. Still an athiest, but now capable of seeing that religion can be a enlightenling, uplifting and transmundane experience for those who believe. Unfortunately, it can also be (and very frequently is) channeled into the most reprehensible, vile and hateful behavior and used to justify any sort of repulsive action or emotion.

Whatever gets you through your life happy and relatively sane is ok by me . . . [b]however[/b], any one of those cocksuckers who show up on my doorstep, bible-in-hand at 8:00 am on a Saturday . . . [}:)]

I believe in God.

I know that this may sound weird, but God is someone I will continue to believe in and to seek out answers to and will continue to believe until I am given strong believable proof that He does not exist (which I don't expect will happen).


Not to make comparisons, but I also believe in UFOs (well, beings from other planets), ghosts and paranormal stuff, too.

I am open to it all and still on a lifelong search to understand it all.

I do have proof positive that Satan exists, though! He posts quite frequently here!

Why should that sound weird? Just because many atheists like to label those with faith as "uncool", "unhip", "backwards", "out of touch", "needy", etc etc does not make any of it true. That's the way it's been since man first walked the earth, and it'll be that way until this world is over. It's never popular with the so-called "cool kids". Having faith contradicts with the general rock 'n' roll mentality of rebelion against the powers that be, whether on earth or in the heavens (I bet the folks in Sodom & Gommorah would have loooved The Cramps). I could care less if someone chooses to see my faith as backwards. That's on them. I know that I'm doing what's right for me, and if they choose to live however they choose, whatever. None of my business...until it's made my business. I won't tread on your right to believe (or not believe) anything you want...so don't tread on mine.

I'll stay uncool, unhip, backwards, or as you call it, "weird", but I have a higher goal than being accepted by the "cool kids". They'll have all the company they can handle in the next life, I'm sure they won't miss my company. I'll be preoccupied learning how to play a harp. I've always had a hard time learning stringed instruments.
