And it's safe to say that had the majority of them been alive during our lifetimes, they'd have been atheists.

That's a pretty pompous statement, even for you.[;)]

Found this study interesting-

Are there many scientists who believe in God? Bryn Mawr College psychologist James Leuba asked this question in 1914 and again in 1933. Specifically, he asked a sample of American scientists if they believed in a personal God who answers prayers and in the immortality of the human soul. According to Leuba, he “chose to define God as given above because that is the God worshipped in every branch of the Christian religion.” Scientists were selected from the standard reference guide American Men of Science (later changed to American Men and Women of Science) and were limited to one of three answers: yes, no or I don’t know. The results of Leuba’s studies found that 40% of American scientists believe in a personal God.

Scientists Who Believe In God – Today
In 1996 and again in 1998, Pulitzer Prize winner Professor Edward Larson of the University of Georgia and Washington Times reporter Larry Witham teamed up to duplicate Leuba’s study in an effort to determine if scientists’ religious beliefs have changed much over the last 65 years. Larson and Witham found that 40% of American scientists still believe in a personal God. This does not include scientists who believe in an impersonal God or in a God who does not answer prayer. Nor does it include scientists who believe in a personal God, but don’t believe in the immortality of the human soul. If we were to take them into consideration, the percentage would likely be higher.

I guess it's because of what Jesus told Socrates in XXX's long ass post [:D] Because God gave man (and woman) free will.

But only 60% of the scientists who received the 1998 survey bothered to respond. May I hazard a guess that out of the 40% who did not, the majority of those found it too ridiculous a question to even address? Or would that make me pompous? [}:)]

[/quote]You said it this time. I didn't.

I'll add one last quote.

"When learned individuals assert that evolution is a fact, they imply that only the ignorant refuse to believe it. How do many react to such an assertion? Some years ago, a man well-versed in evolution interviewed people who accepted the theory. He said: “I discovered that most believers of evolution are believers because they have been told that all intelligent people are believers.” "

All it takes for me is one look at a killer sunset, a drive through some majestic mountains, knowing how perfect the human body is, The way I feel when I hear a beautiful song and I know without a doubt that this wasn't just some accident, there was no colliding of stars or big boom. Somebody put a lot of time and thought into it. [;)]

Just out of curiosity - where did that one come from? I've never heard it and can't find it through Google.

And I am 100% certain that you are certain.

I could be wrong, thought. But I have faith in you, Blir.

yes, I think there will always be religion. The need to believe in a higher power is a natural human tendency for many humans. You guys all brought up some great points about WHY we might believe. Those reasons will always exist. Folks will always wonder, always seek, always worship.

I don't think it has much to do with "intelligence"--this is why "scientists" can believe in God, though they may study topics like evolution or other branches of science having to do with history of man, fossils, bones, etc.. I think it's just a matter of faith; it just depends on what you have faith in. Yourself? Mankind? A higher power? Something else? What you place your faith in is what may help determine your religious outlook.

Lemme add "fear" into the reason why some conceive of a God that will protect them. This doesn't mean that I, as a nonbeliever, do not possess the trait of fear... I just deal with it in a different way[}:)]
Here are some stupid people who believed in God or some higher power.

Nicholas Copernicus (1473-1543)
Sir Fancis Bacon (1561-1627)
Johannes Kepler (1571-1630)
Galileo Galilei (1564-1642)
Rene Descartes (1596-1650)
Isaac Newton (1642-1727)
Robert Boyle (1791-1867)
Michael Faraday (1791-1867)
Gregor Mendel (1822-1884)
William Thomson Kelvin (1824-1907)
Max Planck (1858-1947)
Albert Einstein (1879-1955)

This brings up an interesting personality - Francis Collins, head of the human genome project. I've met him a few times, and he's also a very close colleague of Eric Lander, another scientific bigwig that Wolver actually worked for at one time - small world! Anyway, I'd always thought his affinity for religion was somehow a disinenguous ploy to keep himself in the money with the right-leaning Congress. It turns out he's pretty sincere. I'll present this here more for a different and interesting angle than to support any particular belief...

"No one knows better than Dr. Francis Collins how easy it might be for scientists to play God. As the director of the National Human Genome Research Institute since 1993 — what some call the most prestigious job in science — Collins has led the effort to decode human DNA, along the way developing a revolutionary method of screening genes for disease. Yet according to this widely respected scientist, the newfound power to "read our own instruction book" is no obstacle to faith in the existence of God."

And the rest of the PBS interview...

How time flies! I remember these conversations. LOL

Hey Motors....

Thurston Moore: Catholic who converted to Buddhism in the 90's

John Lennon: first rock star to openly proclaim atheism in lyrics ("God is a concept by which we measure our pain", "There ain't no Jesus gonna come from the sky" etc.).

Score one for a Beatle!...and don't mention "Do You Believe In Rapture?"....uh.....you could take that a lot of ways.[;)]

Hope all is well.

Hiya, Ghosty. Hope you're back for good this time! Yeah, the same topics seem to keep causing the same disagreements but you would have been proud of us NWO'ers this past xmas. It pretty much came and went quietly. [:D]

Good to see things are still hopping here at the NWO. I pop on occasionally but I'm not online as much as I'd like to be these days. I guess the "Let's discuss the merits of Colourfield" topic will come up again soon too.[;)]
