Golly, Tom ... I'd say you're not giving yourself enough credit. By your standards, this is deep and well thought out. At least you didn't rely on a quote from an early 70's cartoon character to make your point. That ought to count for something.

It could be worse Tom: my first thought was "I bet her "wee" didn't smell."

I think Motors is to be commended for his recent posting etiquette, although he may have to turn in his GG membership card.

I'm not sure if the radio station should have encouraged such activity, but they definitely should not be held liable for this woman's death. She was a willing participant. Common sense dictates that you shouldn't consume anything to gargantuan proportions, and at some point her body was telling her to stop it, but she refused.

In any event, the family of the woman will probably sue the radio station and win some kind of settlement, even though, in my opinion, she was the negligent one.

I always thought that the danger of water intoxication was common knowledge ( a term that is apparently becoming more of an oxymoron by the hour). Why else would they have had all the contestants sign the waiver to begin with?

Still, heads have already started to roll:

http://www.nbc11.com/news/10762819/detail.html

Timothy O'Connor, a personal injury attorney, called the waiver "meaningless" and said the radio station still shares some responsibility.

"Waivers deal with the risk of an activity," O'Connor said. "Nobody drinks a glass of water and thinks, 'This can kill me'."

HUH?

You gotta love lawyers- "the waiver is meaningless" - no, actually, it means a couple of attorneys are going to make a lot more money and - uh, agreed, "Nobody drinks A GLASS of water and thinks 'this can kill me'." After A GALLON OR TWO you might start wondering....

...the waiver is meaningless...priceless.

Maybe now all bottled water will now come with the following caution:

"Hey, if you're thirsty drink a bottle, but don't drink 10 gallons dumbass."

Man, I just don't know about this - lots of contradictions. Despite what Motors says, I gotta believe water intoxication is not well known, thus all the news, shock, & disbelief. If it was well known, the station wouldn't have offered the contest. What in our experiences or education would tell us of that danger?

Now, if she'd blown her head off in a radio station Russian Roullete contest, sure, there should be plenty of scorn for both parties but perhaps not the stunned disbelief that she actually died from the activity. We'd be like "Yup, total morons all around fer sure. Darwin at work."

Those are the extremes I guess. Sorta in the middle, Unguarded says she's not sure if the station should have encouraged it but the woman's still to blame since common sense dictates you shouldn't do it. Then why shouldn't the sponsor be to blame for offering to engage in something that's so dangerous in the face of "common" sense? That logic is as weak as the lawyer trapping himself with his own waiver "rationale".

Then I suppose there's eight6's warning label gibe. It does seem retarded to suggest such a thing. It should be so obvious! Like running shoes not having to say "Run...but don't run off a cliff." But we've already seen that to a lot of people it's not obvious. If there's no obvious danger to a product yet there's a hidden danger in a particular usage of it, then why not label that? If you're saying that's lame, she should have known better, how should she have? "Common" sense? Then why the hell were 10 people at the station in on offering the contest? It's not so "common" to them then by definition.

Then is this just a shitty thing all-around with no one really to blame? Yes? Then it's a pretty shitty thing to be flip (notice it's not capitalized!) about her. No? Then is this particular group of 11 people particularly "stupid"? Yes? Then pile on your scorn. No? Then the population as a whole is indeed getting this stupid. Then label those water bottles and accede to what's "common".

Sorry...you guys weren't being completely rational so I threw in some guidance. [:o)][;)]

I'll go with group stupid. It was a dumb idea that attracted those stupid enough to do pretty much anything for a prize. The station should have had some level of medical expertise present to monitor events, and those that participated should have insisted on the same.

The more I think about it, the more I think the contest was designed after the "Hold your wee for a Wii" title was conceived.

Warning: The following post could be considered politically incorrect and/or offensive. Those who are oversensitive or prone to overreact are encouraged not to read it...

I think by definition she should win the Wii. After all, she held her "wee" for the rest of her life. That kind of determination deserves something special. Those other contestants eventually gave in to their bodily urges and/or desire to live. What a bunch of pikers!

The whole thing is freaking absurd. Unless you're in grade school, the thought of creating, promoting or joining in ANY contest having anything to do with bodily fluids/excretions is lame. As are the vulturous lawyers trying to capitalize on the situation.

At least it wasn't a hold your breath for an iPod contest... the bodies would be everywhere.

I now return you to your regularly scheduled postings...

Yup, for some of the folks. The poor lady just seemed ingorant of the facts, just as I'm sure many here would have been despite our perfect 20/20 hindsight. But stupid sure as shit fits those DJs. Criminal case opened. Someone's ass is rightfully in a big sling...

"In an online recording of the show, the DJs can be heard making comments joking about people dying from water intoxication, even discussing a case in Northern California two years ago in which student Matthew Carrington, 21, died after drinking too much water during a fraternity stunt. One of the DJs even admitted they maybe should have done some research before the contest. One female caller, who identified herself as Eva, also phoned in to warn the radio station that drinking too much water can kill."

All of which goes to the claim of universal stupidity. If I'm in that studio listening to those comments, I'm done. You're drinking water to win a video game, not save somebody's life. Ooooh, the irony.

The danger of hyponatremia IS common knowledge in the same way that it is common knowledge that you're supposed to drink 8 glasses of water per day. Believe me, I'm as guilty as anyone of expecting too much from the average American, but anyone not knowing the dangers of drinking too much water is either a retard or has been living in a cave. I'm surprised she didn't save her own life by drooling out the excess water.
