Marianne Faithfull is another - and I say that as a HUGE fan, so I mean no disrespect. She actually [i]used[/i] to have a really lovely voice. But, I still like her gravelly old hag voice as well.

Simon Le Bon's voice isn't particularly strong either. He does that weird whine that makes me shudder.

Neil Tennant from Pet Shop Boys - I [b]hate[/b] his voice. Very very nasal.

You know, regarding Simon Le Bon's voice: it IS kind of whiny. There are many of their songs with his yelping, almost desperate whine. But there are other songs of DD's where he's got this awesome alto: The Chauffer, Sekret Oktober, Come Undone, Arcadia's material...even hardcore Duranies debate about his voice. Most of them recognize he's got a yelpy whine sometimes.

But....I have to say that I LOVE HIS VOICE, anyway. It's both whiny AND sexy !

Oh, I like Simon as well, and for the most part I think his voice is fine. I just sort of cringe during those bits where he hits a whiny note. [:)]

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Tom Waitts yet. His singing voice sounds like a cat being strangled. Bob Dylan sounds like Pavarotti when compared to Waitts.

Man, how did I miss this one!?!?! Lime - Babe, We're Gonna Love Tonight is an awesome song! [:D] It's totally over the top & cheese-tastic.

Lime were pretty huge in the clubs in the early & mid-80's. You always knew when the DJ put on one of their records - she had that high-octane minnie mouse voice & the guy had more of a rock voice than the usual male disco singer. Philly - I'm sure you could find a greatest hits cd...or I could let you borrow mine! It even has some songs that she sings solo....

Honestly though - that voice was ridiculous. I don't know why, but it worked for me.

My vote for bad voice that made it big; Grace Jones. Ever hear her pre-Sly & Robbie albums? Especially Portfolio where she tries to warble through broadway standards like "Send in the clowns," and "Tomorrow." It's so bad that it's hypnotic.

Let's talk about Moby. Play was a record of unprecedented brilliance. (trivia: the only record in history in which every single song was licensed for commercial use.) But when he started singing on subsequent records.....*EH*.....I could take it or leave it. The only reason they may sell is because of the music. His voice is just way too ordinary. It has no power, diversity or emotion. It's boring. He should stick to instrumentals and guest singers on his records.

edit: I know he did the vocals on Play's Porcelain but that was'nt really "singing".

For years, I actually thought the girl was the guy using a vocoder to alter his voice.

Mike Ness of Social Distortion has got one of THE worst voices I've ever heard, period. Funny though, it doesn't keep me from liking a lot of his songs.

Kurt Cobain wasn't exactly Mr. Velvet Fog, either.
