I miss Saturday afternoon Monster Movies....

I remember War of the Gargantuas well. Didn't one or both of them get electrocuted in the end? And yes, I think one was green and the other brown.

Wasn't Science Fiction Theatre on Saturday afternoon on ABC circa mid 70's? - this had Pink Floyd's "Time" as it's theme. I'm not sure if this is the slot where all the monster flicks played but I'm sure some of them were on this show. Anyone remember "Green Slime"?

Just about everything that CBS did live-action for saturday morning was pretty cheesey--that was (and is) part of its charm). Besides at age 8 what did I know about cheesy?

I loved shazam (still do--have several bootleg DVDs), but don't forget:

Oh man, War of the Gargantua's was a favorite along with Giant Robot. They must have shown these every third weekend or so! And yeah, a green and brown one, but I forget which was the good one. Brown I think. Of course Russ Tamblyn's inexplicable starring role is a highlight. The brother-on-brother conflict was heartbreaking and poignant too of course.

And if you want poignant, the heartstrings don't get tugged any harder than by Giant Robot. I guess the full title was Journey Into Space, which itself was just some coddled-together episodes of Johnny Sokko and His Flying Robot. But what kid in-the-know didn't just call it Giant Robot with a fond and knowing wink? I still find myself screaming along with Johnny, "Come back Giant Robot! Come back!!" [sniff]

You must not be watching the Sci-Fi Channel on Saturdays. About all they show are cheesy low budget monster movies.

I remember Giant Robot, and the scene you describe, Blir--man haven't thought about that in 25 years! (saw it on the same saturday afternoon show that would open with the begining of Pink Floyd's "Time" for the theme and would play "It Came from Outer Space" about every third week....

From some reason that movie reminds me of a planetarium show I saw about the same time. A dramatization of Fred Hoyle's The Black Cloud. Made quite an impression on my whole family at the time and it too has a very poignant ending.

Thanks for the link, Hutter, I enjoyed reading it. I'd forgotten it was a joint Japanese - US effort. Definitely a B-movie classic.

Used to whatch on Sat. "Creature Feature" on the local channel KTLA in Los Angeles... I was young and got scared, and still kept whatching the movie... I saw a few Vampira hosted horror flicks, way back when... she was the original that Casandra Peterson ripped off as Elvira, Mistress of the Dark.

Mine were on Friday nites in Cleveland 11:30pm to around 3am, it was called the Hoolihan and Big Chuck Show. They would show horror and monster movies and during breaks would show taped skits and routines. These guys were huge in my youth (mid 70's). We also had the Ghoul on old channel 61 that borrowed his act from the original guy called Ghoulardi who layed the groundwork for many similar shows that aired in the late 60's into the early 70's around the country. Actually Hoolihan and Big Chuck took over his show when he moved on and it is still on the air to this day in Cleveland on Saturday afternoons now.
