Sorry to go off. I worked in health and human services in Texas several years ago and I thought this was a crock then, too.

As an anthropology student, and someone who has also taken sociology and psychology courses I can reassure you that children raised by homeosexual couples are just as equally endowed with the chance to grow up in a healthy happy enviroment. I was one of those kids who grew up with two monsters for parents (KYYX can back me up here- she witnessed it), both who firmly believed it was important to stay married. I would've rather been in foster care. If it weren't for those two losers, I wouldn't have had to spend thousands of my own dollars (seems to me my parents really ought to get the bill . . .) on therapy.

kyyx is correct, children who grow up in homosexual homes get plenty of exposure to each sex/gender in their social lives and extended family. The only real hurt they can receive from being raised by a same-sex couple is from the way SOCIETY treats them, and I don't think it's fair that these kids and their parents should be restricted from their life style because others in our society haven't learned the golden rule. And if you think I'm wrong about that, then go ask an African American if they shouldn't have been allowed to integrate simply because it caused them stress and trauma to fight segregation.

Just some things to make you go "hmmmmm . . ."

Well I don't know if I would compare racism to the challenges of the newer crops of family in this day and age. But anyway, the thing is, what's fair and what's reality aren't always the same thing. I know plenty of girls for example, who had no father figure in the house. And they all have daddy issues which integrate into their relationships with men and it's no picnic for them or the guys they're with.

I'm not saying they would have necessarily been better off with their father in the house. The guy was probably some degenerate of some sort. But the kid did grow up at a loss not having a father figure.

Marv, racism is a form of prejudice, and prejudice is my point. So it does apply. When you use terms like "newer crops of family" you may think you are just speaking from a personal viewpoint, but you are actually being ethnocentric ("what I don't understand or agree with is wrong and only my beliefs are the right ones"). How would you like to be categorized as a "crop"? Smells stinky to me. Once again, let me put it to you: If it isn't fair for black people to be segregated, then should they have just put up with it because it was/is their reality? If you said no then it applies to same-sex couples as well.

Are all prejudices morally equal? I don't know if the trials and tribulations of a single parented, white girl of wealth can be fairly compared to say, those of a black man coming from poverty. Who's prejudiced against such a girl? On the matter of olfactory perception, that smells a little dramatic and sensationalist to me. Maybe we should keep the discussion in the realm of family dynamics and socialization be they black or otherwise. Honestly, I thought we were discussing the welfare of the child growing up in a single parent household but your feelings on same sex couples are noted.

Now when I use the term "newer crop of family" I was merely referring to the broader definition of family that has been used in the past, I don't know, thirty years or so. Before that, a family was pretty much known by what we call a nuclear family today, I guess.....I'm really no expert on this. Does anyone know the appropriate term for a non-nuclear family? I don't want us to put words in each other's mouths anymore.

I could be categorized as "a crop" any day. I'm not that sensitive - everything is context. Anyway, see you in a music thread or two [;)]

OMG this crap about not having a father around for the sake of the kid's wellbeing is total bullshit. What's the definition of a "family" anyways... cuz I guess I'm just lost on that one.

I know a woman who was married and had three kids and about halfway through it she decided she wanted a divorce. But here came her mistake... she asked her bishop's advice and he told her she'd be better off staying married "because of the kids." It's all for the good of the family... yeah right. My best friend is one of the kids and I won't even go into the details of the abuse and self doubt that went on in that "family".

Regardless of what type of "family" you might have there is no rule and no way to prove that one type is better than the other. Single men, single women, same sex, whatever.

Just because their father might have been a scumbag doesn't mean that fathers aren't integral. Or mothers for that matter. Or two good parents, which seems to be the best formula:

Touche, Marv! I love that you were able to supply real statistics for us. REALLY helps. I have to tell you, I believe that people should get divorced if there is psychological or physical risk involved. I also believe that people should be very careful and committed when they marry (they should feel absolutely convinced they are making a good decision, and they should never think to themselves that they can just get a divorce if it doesn't work out). When I married my husband I refused to even consider divorce (except under the afore mentioned circumstances), especially if we had children. Once you have a child you have a commitment to a helpless human being, and getting divorced for any ol' reason is just irresponsible. My husband and I have a real bond, we are committed to sorting out our differences, not just for the kids sake, but for our own as well. It makes us work harder at it, but the result is very rewarding.

Marv, I don't think anyone is saying that having 2 parents is bad, or not desireable. It's just that a person is not going to be totally screwed up in life if they grew up with only one parent.

When I started this thread, I really was looking at one certain group. When a young guy knocks up a girl and goes away. Only to have that girl rais the kid with her mother......and the cycle never ends.
