I really have to give Soft Cell a special mention for writing some of the most saddest songs around. When their first album came out, "Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret", it was the first time I was drawn into the lyrics of an artist. I was young at the time, but when I heard their song "Youth" I knew that someday it would come around to represent the feelings I have of growing and getting older. A lot of their songs would put me in a melancholic mood, but I wouldn't mind this feeling. I remember actually crying at their "Say Hello, Wave Goodbye" on its intial hearing! Even the upbeat song "Torch" would pull at my heart-strings. Never has an artist so resonated with me with sounds and words. Marc Almond and Dave Ball are geniuses, even to this day. Even "Frustration" and "The Art of Falling Apart" became sort of personal anthems for me. Ah, to revel in sadness, like an Edgar Allen Poe character.
