I'm not going to argue the actual issue again because now it's REALLY being beaten to death. All these "activists" seem too stupid to know that now we're in major backlash territory and the two sides are going to totally polarize. WTF, give the guy a chance to redeem himself at least, maybe even make some positive impact. Whatever. I don't even give a shit about that.
But the method of argument that I see both here and in the "news" seems pretty weak. I'll quote the classic Robert DeNiro/Deer Hunter line again: "This is this. This ain't something else. This is this." It's funny that I see the same types of people who would immediately rail against any moral equivilency arguments in other arguments go right to that tactic to refute the Imus naysayers. "Why don't they also do something about the rappers?" Fine, but that is that and this is this. I can hear a Hamas goon saying "Why don't you get on Israel for their acts of terror first?" Well fuck you, I'm telling you YOU'RE a terrorist - I don't need to use a moral equivalence crutch to make my point about one thing in the face of another. Vastly different scale of examples obviously, but I still think both examples use a hypocritically flawed sylogy. This is this - Imus was a cunt to these chicks irrespective of anything else.

What cracks me up is the Rutgers team saying they had their moment in the sun stolen...because we know how much attention the team that finishes second in the women's NCAA basketball tourney garners...

As a social worker who deals with sociology every day, here's my two cents. If you don't like a comedian making fun of white people - don't support them. I would hope that you equally don't support a comedian who makes fun of races other than your own.
If a friend makes a racist comment - or something buried in stereotypes, simply tell them you don't like that. Plain & simple isn't it?
If you don't like rappers using "bitches & ho's" - don't listen to them. That is all you can do. It's all anyone can do. If you want a change in the world - then do it yourself. At the risk of sounding "kumbaya," change starts with the individual. Don't speak for a group, don't assume anything about a group of people. No one is homogenous - you're not like every white person are you? Or like every woman or man on the planet?
Speak from your own experience & listen to others experiences without applying that to an entire race, gender, orientation, etc.
I don't know many black or African American people who like hearing rappers use derogitory language. I think many of them have the same issues that we do.
With that said - understand there are a lot of historical issues that affect people's perceptions. It's easy to say "that was the past." It's not so easy to let it go & it's not so easy to trust someone or something that burned you badly in the past.
I think arguments like Imus vs Sharpton are a good thing. At least it gets people talking, and hopefully someone will hear what the other side says.

I disagree. Imus got his - as well he should - but to pretend that he got the lingo because he didn't hear it from (some) black people themselves is oversimplistic. My position isn't about moral equivalency at all. It's about looking at the heart of the problem.

LOL...saw him stumbling through why it doesn't need to apologize on AC360 last night. What an ass! His out was that although they were "apparently" innocent of the charges, anytime a man pays to see a woman strip "nekkid" as he says, they are definitely in the wrong and deserve whatever comes about as a result of their actions. He nicely sidestepped the question "If the woman were white and raped by a bunch of blacks, would you have still been as vocal, and offered to pay her tuition. His answer was he participated in hostage retrievals in Bosnia, Iraq, etc, and only one of them were black.
What a fucking hustler...for a "man of the cloth" I'm envious of his ability to spew bullshit.

Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. It's pretty scary that these two clowns are the voice of civil rights.
Has anyone else seen Jesse Jackson on the news the past couple of nights? The man needs captioning on the screen because he doesn't speak English. I couldn't understand a thing he said.
I would like to see Imus sit with the girls he insulted and take it like a man. See if they accept his appology. They are the people that need to forgive him. Not Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson.

I swear Jackson was half cut last night on AC360. He's got that ET eye thing going at the best of times, but last night he looked chameleonlike, each eye seemed to be in business for itself.
And he kept saying "nekkid".
