Ann Magnuson in LA: Apr 13 & 14

I'm gonna try to catch her tomorrow night. I flew into LA last night and went thru my usual ritual of trying to plug in decent stations into the car radio. I flip on KROQ - the fucktards are having a period about the impending new Limp Bizkit album, ugh! I flip to normally reliable Indie 103 - the turncoat bastards are playing Tool, ack! I flip over to that new Jack FM - Pet Shop Boys and Midnight. Not bad, listenable.

I tune back to Indie 103 for their morning show - usually pretty good. They're interviewing Ann - cool! She's waxing poetic about the early East Village scene and her times with the Dead Boys and all those great characters. It's fascinating shit. But then she recounts how there hasn't really been any Village scene since about 1987, which prompted her move to LA. She recounted in great detail the music and performance artist scene in LA which she said has kicked ass on New York's ever since those days. This is all kinda funny because I've never been exposed to how broad that scene was in LA desptie dropping in the odd underground club back in the day. It really makes me wanna dig through the LA underground - it's so poorly documented compared to NYC.

Anyway, her interview and remembering her fond recollections of NYC in the movie "The Nomi Song" definitely makes me want to check out her experimental glamrock outfit. And oh yeah, Indie 103 redeemed themselves by playing some Wall of Voodoo and Romeo Void afterwards - they probably didn't want to embarrass themselves in front of Ann. [}:)]

She definitely was a prime player in the 70s-80s in lower Manhattan arts/music/performance scene. As stated, that scene died in the mid-late 80s, primarily due to the gentrification of the decrepit tenement neighborhoods of lower Manhattan. It just became too expensive for poor, starving artists to live (and create) there. Nowadays it's a hot area for expensive apartments,condos, lofts etc. Soho is a giant upperclass mall.
The film "Downtown 81" documents the early 80s Manhattan scene perfectly, with Jean-Michel Basquiat wandering around the abandoned, crumbling, burnt out buildings in lower Manhattan; trying to sell his paintings, and running across The Plastics, DNA. Kid Creole and the Coconuts, James White and the Blacks, Deborah Harry and more.
Not sure if Ann Magnuson is actually in this film, but certainly would fit right in.

Dammit, very sorry to say Schwenko that I missed this last night. Cousins had a reception for me, which led to a lot of drinking, which then led to free box seats at the Ducks/Wild playoff game...fun but not really the slice of LA I was looking for.
