True, except that relieves these so called artists of the moral responsibility their notoriety has placed upon them. Imus's notoriety and audience draw is what S/J used to hang him, it would be nice to see others have to live up to the expectations that Imus apparently couldn't achieve.
I don't know about that, Swampster. MSNBC, CBS are white corporations, Imus is white, most of his listeners are white. Like I said before, they got the whole world listening and had Imus fired and disgraced. Look what they're capable of! I say keep the momentum rolling and go after every single black female negative stereotype perpetrator. Make Martin Luther King proud.
Sounds like you agree white america is the biggest encouragers of the behavior. Howd that happen?
No. You're off. Nothing in my post says that at all.

Anyway, I don't know why your predictions about going after the beast are so dim for the oppressed. I don't buy it. Seeing what they did with MSNBC and CBS, I'd say they slayed the beast.....at least gave him a good shot in the eye. Look at the list of advertisers who pulled out:

General Motors
GlaxoSmithKline
American Express
Ditech.com
Procter & Gamble Co.
Staples
Sprint Nextel Corp.
TD Ameritrade

This hurt big beast, white America where it hurts the most: it's wallet. There's no reason the Sharpton-Jackson duo can't go after the entertainment companies that cover the rappers and comedians who constantly inject the lexicon into the vernacular. OH! BUT I FORGOT! JACKSON SAID IT'S ENTERTAINMENT SO IT'S NOT IN THE SAME LEAGUE.....funny, alot of people looked at Imus as entertainment as well.
Imus's notoriety and audience draw is what S/J used to hang him
How much credit do you want to give S/J for this? I'm sure they would like to think it was because of them for their own selfish reasons. Seems the loss of advertsising dollars was the last straw, I'd be curious how much influence if any S/J had on the advertisers. [:(!]

Enough to make them pull out of a racist/sexist show. All those advertisers are big white corporate America too. The voice of the oppressed and the repressed is loud indeed.....
No. You're off. Nothing in my post says that at all.
Ya, sorry. My mind was on the fact that white america is a big enabler of rap music and it's culture.
There's no reason the Sharpton-Jackson duo can't go after the entertainment companies that cover the rappers and comedians
Yes, I agree. "Hip-Hop" is the goose that laid the golden egg for these companies. Look how entertainment companies have expolited "hip-hop/rap/ganster culture" for profit, I think they will defend it to no end.

I don't know how much record companies depend on advertising dollars, so it might be very tough to make a financial impact unless people just stop buying the product.

I don't know what the hell you're talking about. Any individual, organization or whatever that perpetuates the negative stereotype of a ho, nappy headed or otherwise, should be within the sites of the Sharpton-Jackson coalition and every self respecting Black American. Based on the huge success they have had with the recent Imus / corporate America debacle, this is a reasonable and certainly logical goal.

Why do you argue? You're either against the language of oppression or you're not.

Something tells me that if they set up a protest rally in front of the MTV office, a concert here and there and maybe the Best Buy stores, they'll get their point across.

I may have let some of the attitudes I heard/read (not necessarily on this forum alone) creep into my thoughts. What I've heard repeatedly is that this whole thing is black Americas problem (fault) and people are more outraged at the double standard than they are about "the language of oppression".
Yes, the loss of advertising dollars caused by the antics of a couple of shit stirrers who should be the last people pointing an accusing finger at anyone. None of the shows advertisers pulled out before this event, although Imus has had a predilection for non PC commentary that stretched back years.

Both S&J should face up to the wrongly accused in the Duke case, who, from what I can see have more of a case for crying "I've been scarred for life" than any member of the Rutgers Womens Basketball team.

Interesting commentary:

... My media colleagues shouldn't go just for the easy target rap lyrics. That is no doubt a logical next step...Don Imus should not be the period. He can be the comma. Civil rights organizations, media entities, women's groups and others have an opportunity that they can't pass up. We have the chance to seize the moment to begin a conversation -- an in-depth one -- that has the opportunity to redefine America along the lines of race and sex.

Even though he brings up a good point, I don't know why this guy's playing down the racist part because everyone knows "nappy hair" can only refer to a black person's hair:

I just emailed Sharpton's radio show asking for his corporate sponsers so I could boycott their products and services, not holding my breath on a reply. His show is under the umbrella of Syndication One which in turn is a joint venture of Radio One and Reach Media. Funny thing is Radio One actually has a code of ethics for all employees, did Sharpton get a waiver on this or what?
