It's being reported that the kid was a senior...South Korean...I live with a South Korean woman and our town is largely made up of Koreans. The whole town is not only mourning the incident, but the person reported responsible.

And he grew up in a healthy, normal family and was an engineering major from what they're reporting.

Apparently he was a legal permanent citizen. They are saying he may have changed his major to English. He was writing some really morbid material for classes and got reported to student counseling for help.

Who the hell knows why this happened. What irks me now is I've heard some people say that "kids today just aren't made of the same stuff as previous generations- if it had been 'my' generation we would have sacrificed ourselves to jump him [since the students outnumbered him] for the sake of the rest of the students . . . " They are suggesting these kids were cowards! How the hell can anyone judge if they weren't there themselves? Does anyone have anything to say about this phenomenon?

Well, that post by the AAJA (is that right?) certainly seems knee jerk to me. I haven't heard anyone say anything about race yet. I think some people in Asian communities may feel an affinity because of their race being in common, so they might be worried that there will be backlash. However, so far, I haven't seen anything. Anyone else noticed anything about race?

Taking "race" to another tack, it's interesting that he didn't choose any particular race, age, ethnicity, etc. He pretty much just seemed to shoot anything in his path. He supposedly left a note complaining about rich people and debauchery, yet he seemed to be an "equal opportunity" killer. Would anyone like to comment on THAT?

Sadly I am not surprised by this. But we shoudln't be so quick to judge the gunman. Obvisouly he wasn't very well as he was seeing a counsellor so why the hell didn't they pick up on it?! I knwo fo rdamn sure if I told my counsellor I was thinking to get a gun and go shooting I would be taken into a mentla hospital no doubt!
