FREE WILL. I believe we have free will to live as we may. Most people are rational and live comfortably among others, abiding by society's laws and rules, not causing disruptions to the whole scheme of things. Of course, there are some who choose to exercise their free will by disrupting others, disrupting the "flow", all of that. But anyway, my point is that we are all in control of our own destiny. It is our choices that make us who we are, script our lives, and determine our futures. This is just MHO....I have never believed in some sort of "life force" or "balance" that controls us all. If there are angels, demons, or some other entity like that, they are here to guide us, to help us, to support us, but certainly not to control us !!!

I didn't know that god decided that Jesus should die. I thought Jesus was killed by the Roman authorities, because the Roman empire mercilessly put down any possible source of rebellion or riot. Wasn't the story that they considered Jesus to be a bit of a rebel ?Certainly, I suppose, Jesus had no free will there. If god did indeed decide that he should die, what a terrible thing to do to your son!

I suppose that one's free will goes as far as you can take it before you run into someone else's free will to kill you!

Many people believe that Jesus did have free will and could have chosen not to die. Before he was arrested, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him. 'Abba, Father,' he said, 'everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.' Mark 14:35,36.

I take that to mean he didn't have to die--he obviously didn't want to--but that's what God had planned, so he did.

Interesting question. As I understand it, Jesus (the manifestation of God in human form and therefore God's "son" so to speak) came prepared to die. In fact it was his sole purpose for being here and Christ spent an awful lot of time telling his followers that he was going to die, often referring to himself as the "lamb of God" since a lamb had traditionally been sacrificed by early Israelites in atonement for sins. The crucifixion was a symbolic gesture on a grandiose scale, the message being that mankind does not possess the purity of heart and mind to ever deserve Heaven. Christ, being somewhat divine in nature, was sacrificed instead of mankind, the deal being that if you believed in Christ's divinity you would earn the peaceful afterlife you really had no other way of earning. Neither the Romans nor the Jews are responsible for Christ's death since he came specifically to die (the crucifixion was'nt much of a surprise to Jesus). Was Christ's death a painful one? Hell yes. Why? Because life sucks and is unfair.

Whether you choose to believe in this or not is up to you. I don't have any trouble with anyone who does or does'nt. Frankly in my day to day life I've met Christians who were total scumbags and some who were standup folk. I meet the same amount of non-Christians who are either assholes or cool. I know plenty of people who are Christ-like in their devotion to charities, helping their fellow man, etc. but would'nt call themselves Christians and have probably never read the bible in their lives.

The whole "Republican = Christian" thing is complete and utter bullshit. An invention of the media and so far...a rather effective way of brainwashing people. There are plenty of Liberal Democrat Christians but you won't see them on CNN because that does'nt sell cars and stereos. It's a great trick actually..portray all Christians as radical snake-handling maniacs and gullible people will tune in by the millions. The more sensational the better. Most people sit on front of these cable news networks all day, wide-eyed and drooling, thinking to themselves "Gee..it must be true, it's on TV" which leads to stereotypes and propagandizing and perhaps...even more shocking...the myth that a guy like Henry Winkler could be a babe magnet.

Oh well, I responded to yet another thread on religion. Did'nt see "The Passion" by the way. I like my movies with hot chicks in them.

while overall I agree with what you have to say, I have to tell you that I live in the South and there is a dominant presence here of "republican/christians" who are the snake handling type you describe. In fact, (I kid you not) there are 2 snake handling churches within 10 miles of my house! It is frustrating to live in a place that buys the religion+govt. formula so whole heartedly. It effects the way our local govt. is run and how we the citizens can lead our lives.

I'm not originally from this place, so it is a very drastic change for me. We have lived here for almost 7 years and have decided that despite the warm climate and beautiful beaches we will move as soon as I get my degree. It's not a live and let live mentality here. A lot of these people honestly believe that it is their duty as Christians to do all they can to convert you. My own neighbor slammed me the other day because she kept preaching to me and I asked her, very politely, if she could please not talk to me about her religion. She told me, deadpan, that if she didn't tell me then I'd never know because it's obvious that I don't go to church. (She actually checks on our car every sunday morning to see if we go!)

I know that the whole nation is not this way (thankfully), but I just feel that it is important to emphasize that there are religiously-oriented sub-cultures in our country that are very fervant in their believe that we are nearing the end of days and that this is the time for the battle of souls. When people truly believe such things there is just no telling how far they will go in their push to convert, at all costs, because they feel righteously justified.

My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father, prepare to die.
