Work out Machines

Postby phillyidol » Tue Apr 17, 2007 10:24 am

I need some help. The weather stops me from running way too often so I want to buy something for the house. I thought tread mill to run on but my friend says the elyptical machine is better. What do you guys think and why?

They say the eliptical is better because you're not incurring the repetitive stress damage to your body that can come from jogging, running or walking. I'm such a creature of habit though, that I can't stop using the treadmill. But I wear really good sneakers and I usually do more of a climbing kind of exercise with higher angles on the machine so the shock to the heel is at a minimum. When not doing that, I'm all over the stairmaster. I should speak to my chiropractor about this especially since I have scoliosis.

Well..i'll go for threadmill Philly.

But then again, these equipments are expensive in our country. About 20 to 40 thousand per unit. I just do push ups. [:D][:D][:D]

I really don't like treadmills. I do the eliptical trainer once a week and run twice a week. Besides giving you less impact on your joints, the eliptical trainer allows you to go backward, working different muscles than you do running.

Have you tried the eliptical machine? Try it first, You might not like it? I find it awkward. I use the treadmill and sometimes the StairMaster...My fav is a real bike outdoors.

Well it looks like a dead heat Philly![:p]

Actually, my fiancée and I just bought one of those compact ProForm ellipticals just the other week off HSN. After assembling the monster in a little over 2 hours, I'll have to admit it's solid and pretty damn impressive. We got it for around $500 (retails for about $800) and it folds up to save space, which is a must in our tiny condo. It's a serious calorie burner and I certainly felt it 2 days later. This definitely beats the silly Gazelle that we've had for a couple years, which was passable but clearly a cheap imitation of the elliptical in terms of motion. Thank god I never endured one of the Tony Little DVDs that came with![xx(]

Man this is hard for me. The tie on which is better is not helping. I know the eliptical gives a low impact, better workout. But I did try one and found it hard. I'm afraid that I might use it alot less because of that. I'm still on the fence with this but I want something soon.
I even saw the stationary bikes and thought of that but I would feel silly riding that in the house.
But thanks for your ideas guys, I really need the help.

My experience with eliptical machines is that they're often awkward the first time or two you use them and that different types have different feels. You might want to try out a few different ones and see if one is more comfortable for you.

Its better if you google a picture but its sort of a stair master machine I guess. But like an improved version.

AND!!!!!!!!! Even though I would prefer a treadmill....I think I am going with the elyptical! I know many of you were losing sleep over this one. I spoke to a trainer friend of mine and he sold me on the pros of that machine. Thanks to all of you for your help!

Good luck with your Eliptical machine. Unfortunatley my place is way to small for one. I have a stationary bike but it is uncomfortable so I usually end up walking instead.

Isn't an elyptical machine one of those workout machines that's sort of shaped as a staircase? Anyway I picked the treadmill. I might just get one of them my my room.
