Your favorite fast food

Over the last few years I've tried to get as far away from fast food as possible. If I want something fast I go to Subway or Schlotskys. There's a local place called Taco Box that actually serves Mexican food that's not shipped in from somewhere loaded with preservatives and junk. Not too bad as far as healthy goes and at least it's fresh.

But once in a while, on occasion, you might see me sneaking through the drive thru at McDonalds. [:p]

I love fast food. I like that it's so salty. I like that it's so greasy. I like that it's just so damn tasty. I wish I didn't, but this is the cross I must bear in my life.

No they don't all the American chains have overtaken it!But I have fond memories from the '70s when I was little, mum and dad would take us to whimpy for a trea on Saturdays and I still remember how tasty and filling the burgers were, the onions wer crsipe, the buns were a decent size, the relish there was lots of it lovely burgers! Thast hte thing, fastfood was a real treat back then now it's a meal option, how tiems change! Small wonder there's so many fat kids about now! Anywa back to the subject, I went to Cleethorpes which is a kidna coastal town in the Uk (although the lack of sea was disaappointing me beign a Southerner and all) with my fiancee at the time and his nephew and we actually foudn a Whimpy bar! I coudln't believe it, it was liek a step back in time like Dr Who or something! The food wasn't as nice as the '70s stuff though, quel surprise! Do you rememebr them havign ice-cream parlous int he States in the '70s? I remmeebr that they had an ince-cream parlour when I was little and they has so many different ice-creams we went there as a treat too with my brother. Oh it was so cool in the '70s!I'm glad I was little kid then and not now, kids seem depressed now evn thought they have more fancy stuff than we had.

Nice memories, thanks for sharing... I ate at Whimpy's in 1985 when I was in London, it was total shite then... bad food, but I wanted to try it, as all my friends had all raved about them being better than McDonald's, and maybe they were at one time, not that McD's is steller or anything like that!

Ice cream palours you talk about, I remember two very fondly... the one with all the flavours would probally be 31 Flavors: Baskin 'n' Robbins Ice Cream, and my fave, Farrall's Ice Cream Palour... the chain went under, as in closed almost all their locations, I had my 7th, 8th, and 9th Birthday Parties there with a huge bowl of ice cream called the Zoo, it fed all and then some...

I have one in my town, boy was I surprised when I moved here 5 years ago to see a Farrell's Old-Fashion Ice Cream Parlour! Been there a few too many times, and the burgers are real good! [:D]

Argh, you guys are merciless !

I really haven't eaten fast food since mid-to-late 90s. I was never much one for fast food--my parents did not take us to those places because they thought that kind of food was nasty. (which it is). My folks were German immigrants who espoused a healthy meat-and-potatoes diet, and/ or anything made from scratch, with unprocessed ingredients. So I was lucky not to grow up with most junk foods.
I just never went for fast food really, even during college, b/c it always made me feel queasy and unsettled afterwards. It just never seemed like real food to me. Also, I never trusted the whole corporate McD thing, and avoided that type of company.

Then, of course, I read [i]Fast Food Nation[/i] ( as well as Eric Schlosser's other great work [i]Reefer Madness[/i], a good overview of our sex & drug industries in the US). This book, mentioned previously up above, is an eye-opener to say the least ! Everyone should read this book. I have met the author twice and got into a good conversation with him about this topic.

So, to conclude, sure, everyone--even the activists among us--has eaten fast food in their lives. Including me, infrequently. But learning has to take place sometime...mine did years ago. I just haven't touched that stuff since then. I regret that my eyes were not opened from the very beginning, b/c it all just sounds like hypocritical blather. What can I say...I am not faultless. I guess if it makes me sound like a charlatan, oh well. I no longer eat that stuff now, and that's what counts.

I do recommend you read "Omnivore's Dilemma" if you liked those other books you mentioned. It really ties in to the theme.

I am an avid carnivore and LOVE beef, but after reading that I never want to eat cow meat again- unless i grow the cow myself (in which case I would give it a name and bond and then I wouldnt' be able to eat it!!!).

So get to baking those muffins, woman! LOL

To take this on a slightly different tack (if anyone wants to bite the bait, that is), does anyone here eat a "homecooked" dinner at the table with the family (tv and phones turned off)? How many days a week? We do. Typically 5-6 nights a week. I'm glad I can give my children that. It's good family time and we always have "balanced" meals (I'm such a mother that way!).

Anyone remember Red Barn? I used to love them! I remember the ads had a singing drumstick, hamburger...and something else. I used to have the puppets they gave away. I guess you'd call them puppets - they were just sandwich bags with 2 pockets on the sides for your thumb & a finger. Ahhhhh good times....

Somebody here from Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia? I love their Al Baik Store. For anyone, maybe it's just an ordinary fried chicken like in any famous food chain stores but to the people of Jeddah, nothing beats Al Baik!

By the way, I'm presently here in Jeddah and I love also Mc Donald's (because of my 4 yr. old son), Pizza Hut, Chili's and Friday's. Oh! Starbucks, too.

We eat as a family on weeknights and I usually cook (the Mr. breaks out the wok sometimes, but 99% of the time, I'm the chef).

I quit eating fast food back in February and I don't miss it at all. I have more energy than ever, am sleeping better than I've slept in 15 years AND I've dropped 15 pounds. I've gradually cut back on the crappy stuff my kids were consuming (fast food, Cokes, sugary juices), too.

My 15-year-old son watched "Super Size Me" in his health class at school and absolutely refuses to eat fast food. The younger two would like a little more McDonalds in their lives, but it's not going to happen [:)]
