Anthony Wilson dies from cancer

Anthony Wilson, the music mogul behind some of Manchester's most successful bands, has died of cancer.
The Salford-born entrepreneur, who managed New Order, Joy Division and the Happy Mondays, was diagnosed last year during a routine visit to the doctor.

The 57-year-old, who launched Factory records and the Hacienda nightclub, underwent emergency surgery in January to remove a kidney.

He passed away on Friday evening in hospital.

On a personal note - I met Tony last year during Canadian Music Week
and stayed in touch with him since. This is a great loss and he will be missed.

TONY Wilson's funeral on Monday will be an invitation-only service at St Mary's RC Church, in Manchester.

Fans wishing to pay tribute to the man dubbed 'Mr Manchester' have been asked instead to send flowers, or make a donation to the Christie Hospital Trust.

His family have also asked that they be allowed to grieve privately for him.

Friends, family, musicians and colleagues in the music industry are all expected to attend.

Among the floral tributes will be the message to Mr Wilson: 'With Love From Liverpool,' created from red roses and white chrysanthemums.

A group of 30 musicians and music professionals from Liverpool have spent £600 on the flowers, to symbolise Mr Wilson's role in bridging the intense rivalry between the north west's two biggest cities.

Contributions to the cost of the flowers have come from Mr Wilson's personal friend - and former regional health chief - Dr John Ashton, Pete Wylie of The Mighty Wah, author Kevin Sampson, band manager Rob Swerdlow, venue boss Philip Hayes, among others.

Dr Ashton, who was born in Liverpool, said: "There's been a lot of unpleasantness about Liverpool and Manchester and we thought this was a way to transcend all the tribal stuff which exists between the two cities.

"Tony was a Manchester man but he had a lot of time for Liverpool and discovered some bands here.

"He believed, like I do, that it's London we should rival and not other north west cities. The north west should be pulling together."

Mr Wilson, broadcaster and owner of Factory Records, died aged 57 last Friday after a heart attack, with his family and friends at his bedside.

He had been having treatment for kidney cancer at the Christie Hospital.

Discussions are taking place regarding a separate memorial service for the man who launched the careers of many Manchester bands.
