It was when Alternative Radio embraced Grunge, which was pretty much the antithesis of New Wave. To me, Grunge was a lot closer to say, Deep Purple than The Sex Pistols.

Wasn't New Wave about getting away from that testosterone fueled Dinosaur Rock?

Bands like Nirvana and Soundgarden brought it back- just under a new name. And, sadly, inspired others like Limp Bizkit and Korn.

Talk about de-evolution!


BTW- New Wave is still very much alive and well, thank you. It has gone back to where, perhaps, it best belongs- the Underground.

Despite the rise of Rap, Emo, Nu-Metal, Pop and Country, it survives. If you doubt this, just check the "Next Wave" section of this board at:

The Killers, Modest Mouse, Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys, The Sounds, Black Tie Dynasty, Placebo, Hot Hot Heat, Editors, The Strokes, She Wants Revenge, Muse, The Bravery, Interpol, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and hundreds of others are as New Wave as anything that came out of the 80s.

-Disco music-house music-hip hop-Discographic's industry-and metals bands.

What killed New Wave to me, wasn't the fact that a gaggle of talentless hacks were jumping on the bandwagon (though that contributed indirectly). No, it was the good, authentic New Wave artists reacting to that gaggle by changing their style to be less "New Wave".

It's understandable, to be sure. When you are a dark, brooding synth pioneer, and suddenly the charts are filled with synth acts, you have an urge to distance yourself from that ilk. But I disagree with that urge.

If only more bands had the fortitude to keep on keeping on in SPITE of the bubblegum synth music that became prevalent, New Wave would have continued for many more years.

I think the lines were drawn when we started calling bands "college rock." It was something that seperated newer music/groups from the mainstream & top 40 wave. I think once that happened, new wave was over as an "alternative" genre of music.

All of those new, overly earnest, politically aware bands just didn't fit in with the groups that were still singing "I live in outer space & we're all robots and now we'll dance..."

I dont anything "killed" new wave.it was a music fad just like heavy metal in the 80s. also it has to do with the time change. music just changes about every ten years anyway.

That's exactly what I meant when I said New Wave died a natural death. As the younger generation comes up they find new bands with new sounds because they don't want to listen to what their older siblings, or even their parent's, liked.

Nothing killed New Wave except the ticking of the clock.

I dont neccasari;y blame grunge for the death of new wave as new wave had already taken a back seat by then--but I do blame grunge for almost single handedly killing anything good about rock from the early 90's on. If I was growing up in the 90's and grunge was all I heard on all the rock as well as alternative stations ( as it was ), I may have been turned off of "rock" as most of that whole generation was.
