Depeche Mode - Some Comments

Postby Sean » Mon Aug 27, 2007 4:19 am

Do you think if DM released a dvd of all of their tv performances that we saw in the documentaries, it would sell?!? I, myself, would buy it in a heartbeat. I really hope they decide to do that. There were so many performances that they did of songs that did not have videos.

Also, this sounds kinda goofy but do you guys still get goosebumps, chills, and even teary eyed when you watch the part in 101 where Dave waves in the air and they pan out to the audience and everyone there is doing the wave with him. To me, that was the greatest moment in New Wave history.

Incredibly, I think this is my first Depeche Mode posting ever. My favorite band throughout the majority of the 80's and the band that defines New Wave.

To put it simple Sean,

1. YES
2. YES
and,
3. YES

to all three of your paragraphs... am in total agreement. Even when I saw DM on their Exciter tour Dave did the waving in the air thing. I even still watch my 101 DVD regularly (after my VHS finally wore out!).

DM is still my favorite band of all time.[|)]

I would definitely buy the full concert of the 1982 Hammersmith Odeon performance, whether DVD or CD.

On that matter, I would also buy the Duran late 1981 Hammersmith Odeon show (audio was recorded by the BBC, and the video was recorded by someone also).

Oh absolutely I would buy it! I really have enjoyed the new DM CD/DVD re-issues. The documentaries are extremely well done and I as a HUGE fan since 1983, I was blown away to see so much archival material that I'd never seen before.

And I agree with a DVD of the 1982 tour. I know it was recorded, because that live show was the very first thing I'd ever seen/heard from Depeche Mode. It was broadcast on Nickelodeon of all places back in late 1983. I remember just seeing the band's name briefly and couldn't fully remember what it said. A few months later, again on Nickelodeon, they played the "People Are People" video and I was like, "THAT'S the band that did that great live show!!!!" Was simply no going back after that........

Amazing how simplistic Violator sounds but how much effort was put into each and every little sound that you hear to make it sound perfect.

i wonder if someone could rip them from the dvds and make a collection on one dvd? not for sale of course, just for fans who wanted to spend the money on blanks and postage...
i'm sure my mac could do something like that, but i haven't finished reading the manual. har har har!

i've never really thought of depeche mode as defining new wave. to me, new wave was all about the high-gloss disposable image over content. i thought the very nature of throw-away fashionpop defined new wave, as it was a reaction to drudgy 1970's hippie-rock excesses and earnest, treacly story balladeers.

take duran duran: cunning strategists in capezio shoes and pastel blazers, and very "new wave." flock of seagulls, all hair-dos and guitar effects. devo: outfits and technology. toni basil: cheerleader camp and video albums about breakdancing. human league: assymetry and makeup and techno-motown. etc. etc.

not to devalue any of those acts. they all had crucial parts to play in introducing hard concepts like ennui or ambiguity to 1980's suburbanites.

depeche mode to me had far more import. sure, they seemed to take everything they did deadly seriously, but it was that commitment to their fatalist vision that certainly intrigued me! once they moved past those blippy drum machines and vince clarke sing-song melodies (not hatin', i loves me some vince) i think they actually rose ABOVE new wave. they became important. not merely iconoclastic in their style, but transcendent.

i sound like i know a thing or two. har! ;-) forgive my spelling though, when i get rolling anything goes. and yes, i got a little stream-of-consciousy.

at any rate, i'm with you. dm are fantastic.

would definetely buy old tv appearances on dvd, especially the old ones... Hammersmith 82 would make a perfect dvd (and was in fact rereading those old DM infosheets from around the time) considered as VHS release... take that show + the old tv-appearances and maybe add the early 1984 Birmingham Odeon show (that was at least partly filmed for tv - one can see it on the Construction Time Again remaster) - would make a perfect dvd... after that go on with all the 1984/85 appearances + add Live In Hamburg as a second dvd, would make a fantastic set... count me in, to be one of the first in line to buy that!

<p align="justify">I used to think the same thing about bands labeled as "New Wave"... that is... until I heard Suicide, Cabaret Voltaire, Pere Ubu, and early albums by Sparks. DeMode's first album sounds very New Wavy to me, esp. tunes such as "Photographic" and "Just Can't Get Enough."

That would be cool Ben. Other items that I think DM should do before they retire:

1) Release the rest of the videos that haven't made it onto official dvd

2) Do a concert with both Vince and Alan there

3) Make one more album that will be the best DM album ever so they can go out in style
