The Power Of A Song

Postby Retro_NRG » Wed Aug 29, 2007 6:35 am

Is this for real?

I came across this account making reference to TFF's 'Shout' on (of all things) a Rock Music Site.

Seriously, have you or anyone you know of been similarly affected/ moved (in a positive way) by a particular song or piece of music? (NW or NNNW)

My personal believe is that rock songs have saved many people's lives. And I am not talking about Live Aid or Farm Aid. I am talking about people in depression out of which they came with the help of one or more rock songs. Therefore I definitely believe what ARgent said: "God gave Rock 'n Roll". Here is 2 songs and 2 stories to prove it.

Shout - Tears for Fears : It is very interesting that the name Tears for Fears refers to primal scream therapy. Therefore the song "Shout" is very suitable. It is all about getting rid of all your anger and frustrations by just shouting them out. Don't ignore them.

In 1992 I was driving back from an Anthropology seminar in Cape Town and picked up a hitch hiker. He said he was on his way to Johannesburg to go and visit his brother. I had cd compilations of my favourite songs in the car. About 400km from Cape Town the guy (His name was Toney Fernandez) started to scream just after Shout played. He told me that he was not going to his brother - but going to commit suicide in Johannesburg. At his work he was moved to an office where he did not see people and it made him so depressed that he could not think straight. That morning he left home for office and took the road. I stopped and we spoke. Fortunately there was a bus going back to Cape Town and after calling his worried wife, he went back to Cape Town.

His whole life changed. He got his old job back, they had children and lived happily ever after.

Sometimes I wonder what would have happened if Shout did not play. One song changed his life.

Hmmm...[8)]

Before I embarked on a career as a sock, I had dreams of being a nurse.

The I heard Teenage Enema Nurses In Bondage...changed my life.

Up until the accident, "Sunglasses at Night" changed my life.

I don't doubt that songs can change the mood or perspective of an individual for a short period.
I am somewhat skeptical of these stories. They read almost like the chain stories that we get in our email (and then run to snopes.com to check their validity).
I would think that "Rip It Up" by Orange Juice would be a motivational song in attempting to turn the page.

Now, I'll play along like Ed6 and Stuck:

I had aspirations of joining the CIA...until I heard The Germs sing "What we do is secret"

As powerful as music can be, I still kind of doubt stuff like this.
It's a beautiful thought though. [;)]

To be honest, without 80s music, i would most probably be insane, or worst, be dead (bored to death, hence commiting suicide)

SITE, what accident? why Sunglasses? mind sharing, just curious[:)]

see, he was inspired to wear his sunglasses at night by the corey hart song. all was fine and good until the inevitable: he was wearing his sunglasses, and it was night, so it was dark. tragedy! he had an accident because it was so dark and he couldn't see! the specifics of what happened aren't important, but rest assured his life would have been better had he not been inspired by that corey hart song to wear his sunglasses at night! i hope he's okay! oh well, live and learn! LOL! LOL!
