Best Pipes in NW: Male and Female

No not those kind of pipes...

Wondering who the Outpost membership thinks has/had the best technical voice quality in NW. In other words who had the best range, pitch control, abilities like vibratto, etc.

I've got a couple of ideas for both male and female but would be interested in other's thoughts.

Those who were blown away by a live vocal performance, I'd be interested in who and when

For females, I always thought that Alison Moyet had an incredible voice. I'm no expert in tone/pitch ect., but I know what sounded good to me, and I thought she was unrivaled.

For the males, it's pretty hard to top Tony Hadley's voice. He could sing teh phone book and I'd enjoy hearing it.

I don't think I have one for the female side yet... maybe Liz Fraser and Lisa Gerrard, but I don't think they were at their peak until much later.

Back around 85 or 86, there was an article in [i]Star Hits[/i] magazine where 3 vocal coaches were interviewed. These people have worked with everyone from Siouxise to Annie Lennox. If I remember correctly, one guy spoke very highly of Marc Almond's ability, but not so much of Kate Bush's. Someone else spoke about how Neil Tennant worked extremely hard to improve his voice.

I'd agree with Marc Almond. He seemed to have a very strong range and control. He was able to use vibratto to good effect, as well

I'd give Glenn Gregory props alongside Tony Hadley

And yes Annie Lennox is quite the vocal acrobat.

Must add Sinéad O'Connor to the already mentioned and acknowledged roster of divas.

Listen to "Man in Chains" if you have any question as to how good a voice Hadley has. It is a breathtaking vocal performance.
