I was at a coffee shop for 4 hours last night, and had the pleasure of listening to First Wave. I was taken aback. There was only 3 songs in the whole session I coudln't recognized. They played freakin' tracks by Pylon!

I'm quite impressed. It's like listening to my ipod. They played more obscure tracks than the same old tired 80s shit. Also, 99% of the songs were between 1978 and '84. Early Blondie tracks(X-Offender) were played as well.

I always try to remind myself that before Sirius, I didn't hear most of these songs on the radio any more. That being said, I have become weary of the limited playlist and college rock leanings. It frustrates me that the only time they play bands like Cocteau Twins and The Chameleons is on Sunday's 'Dark Wave' show, which is hardly 'dark' at all (unless The Smiths' "There Is A Light" makes you want to go goth). If they added the bands limited to Dark Wave, to the bands heard on Fred Schneider's Party Out of Bounds, and mixed them in during the week, we'd have a much deeper playlist on 1st Wave. I've had Sirius 2 years, and heard The Chams twice - that's bullshit! Also, I hear Cocteau Twins on Chill 35 more than 1st Wave. I just point those bands out as examples..there are many others.

A friend of mine is a dual subscriber (has both XM and Sirius), and says that Fred's playlist is deeper than 1st Wave's. Is this true?

I was listening to Fred's set when it happened, and it seemed pretty deep to me. More than 1 song by the same artist was featured( a few times).

I was in Denver back in June for a weekend to see The Police. My rental car had XM in it, so I kept it on Fred the entire time. While they did go deeper into album tracks on that station, there was still a lot of repeating - in the sense that they'd play 3 songs off the same Talking Heads album ([i]Naked[/i]) in the space of an afternoon. I heard a lot of artists repeated in that same manner - 2 or 3 songs from a small pool of artists. I did hear some great tracks, but if a station is going to play an album track, it should be a good track. Some album tracks work better in the context of an album. I got the feeling that someone basically just had their iPod on shuffle when listening to Fred.

What I like about 1st Wave is that it reminds me of listening to the radio or MTV in the '80s - it's a much "warmer" experience with the DJs (Fred has none.) It's kind of why I listen to the radio. They could definitely use some more variety and dig in a little deeper, but they do surprise me every now and then and play some cool album cuts.
