Aaargh...which new iPod?

160 Gb of space??? Does that one come only in black or do they make it in other colours???
I've also got the 4Gb Nano and I'm very happy with it... the only thing is that I've already filled a bit more than 3 Gb of it and I had to think things very well so as to achieve a nice diversity. I wish I could have uploaded stuff with not so much attention of how many sapce I was taking. It was pretty hard!!

Well the post Y2K laptops still have a lot of usability left in them. One I turned into a DVR, another one I take with me to back up or upload to a server digital photos that I take while I'm in the field, another one I take with me on vacation and use as a portable DVD player. Or they're randomly strewn around the house for on the fly web surfing or iTunes streaming from the server in my office.

The pre Y2K ones I just pick up for the sheer fun of collecting. Some people collect old cameras, some people collect old salt & pepper shakers...a graphic designer like me weaned on the Mac likes to collect these old babes. They're like these industry artifacts of the digital age to me, not unlike the first printing presses which really marked the beginning of a modern era in graphic design:

I also like analyzing the evolution of the industrial design, something Mac has always been noted for. Many a time they need work and I enjoy the challenge in finding parts, taking them apart and figuring them out. They're not expensive. Twenty, thirty bucks off eBay and it's like I have a puzzle to figure out. But the real fun is on a Friday night when I network them all together and - no, just kidding [:o)]

Nice! I just picked up a Mac laptop for 30 bucks off of ebay. bI maxed out the ram and bought a USB LAN adapter rather than getting an airport card. I put Photoshop and microsoft word on it and gave it to my son. He loves it and of coarse all his friends at school think it's cool because it's "retro" I never noticed a flaw in apples design though. when the laptop is open the little apple logo on the lid lights up, but is upside down. Oh yeah, I picked up a 30 gig harddrive off of ebay for 12 buck and popped that in, partitioned it so system 9 could have it's own space (the dvd player doesnt work on OS X, so if he wants to watch movies he has to boot sys. 9

Wow, that's actually a very, very clever solution. You must have bought a Wallstreet/Lombard/Pismo series G3 Powerbook. The black one? There's actually a way to make them DVD compliant but it involves a relatively costly hardware solution that I could never justify on such an old Mac. I wonder if I installed Classic would I be able to play a DVD without even having to restart? See, this is the kind of fun I have on my old Macs [:p] But yeah, these are computers I don't mind letting my kids get their grubby hands on because they cost so little.

P.S. The upside down logo thing was corrected on subsequent Power and iBooks.

Jeez, so which of you wants first dibs on my now-useless PCMCIA USB and Firewire cards? I think I also have the DVD Video PC card that enables DVD playing on a couple of the older G3 PBs, not to mention spare CDRW and DVD drives.

Now if I could only find a DeLorean I could sell to Marv or Ben. You know, it's got that sweet 2.8 liter French-made V6 so befitting of a supercar. It certainly helped make it the success that it was.

Yup, a Lombard G3. My son loves it and all it's retroy goodness and that little usb LAN thing works great for the price. Yeah, a friend told me about a hardware fix, but it wont kill him to boot 9 to watch a flick. Old macs are cool. My next project is to turn one of the real old ones into a fish tank for my office. [;)]

Oh btw, it really doesn't look much different from the older iPod. One could easily mistake the two. If you're looking for maximal new gizmo wow factor, this isn't the choice. This really is soley for the drunk-with-power-with-ungodly-storage types.

- PowerPC 6100/66
- PowerPC 7500
- Wallstreet G3 laptop (266 MHz)
- Black Intel Core Duo 2.16 GHz laptop
- 1.8 GHz iMac
- Dual 1.8 GHz G5 Desktop

Gone but not forgotten:
- Mac SE
- an original 128k or 512k (can't remember which)

Just got rid of a blue/white G3 desktop my mom had (wish I'd kept it now). I'm looking for another Wallstreet/Lombard/Pismo G3 laptop for running OpenBSD UNIX - which has been ported to a quite a few Mac models. I was looking for an old Quadra or Centris desktop for this but came to the same realization - the laptops make much more sense from a space standpoint.

I let my kids pound away on the old PowerPC's but my wife is pressuring me to get rid of them due to space and clutter issues. And yes, for fun on a Friday night I do occasionally network them together . . . [:D]. Actually it's for a reason, most of them have been in my extended family for 10-15 years, so there is a defacto archive of family history in the form of files, emails, etc., so one current project is one of archiving and preservation. I spend way too much time trying to get old SCSI hard drives mount as well as getting the old OS 7 and 8 machines to talk to the newer models so I can preserve all the old files.

As for the iPods, I vote 160 GB Classic. Being out west, memory is like ammo, you can never have too much.

I'd forgotten about that one - that's a sweet machine. Way ahead of its time. Back on topic, sort of, this reminds me of how the iPod/iPhones are slowly morphing into sub-sub notebooks themselves. With built in, stripped-down OS 10 and that amazing touchscreen the potential is practically limitless.

How did the wireless card work out on your 1400? I'd like to pick up a wireless PCMCIA card for the Wallstreets at some point.
