I always thought the intro to Duran Duran's Wild Boys was really cheesy and stupid. Drum roll: WILD BOYS! WILD BOYS! WILD BOYS! WILD BOYS!!! Drum Roll: WILD UH! WILD! WILD....BOYS (BURRRRS!) To be honest the first verse sounds kind of stuck in dead air but as the song goes on it gets a lot better. But I think it would be a better song if it wasn't for that intro.

Agree on "Angels on the Balcony".
Another: New Musik's "Straight Lines", which is an all time favorite, but I could do without the doorbell followed by 10 seconds of silence before the song starts. When I've put this on CDRs for friends I've cut this off.

"Relax" by FGTH starts with what sounds to be a difficult bowel movement, then gets even worse. Not one of my faves but a very popular NW song.

i agree, it's awkward, but i think it works in its favor: it's disconcerting, strange, and then suddenly that gorgeous acoustic shimes in over that cold drum machine, and this delicate balance is struck between the organic and the machine. the beginning sets up the uneasy balance to come. jeez! i love that album!
and i disagree about "angels on the balcony" too- it's this staunch, unfeeling, driving, robotic, march rhythm (oweing more than a bit to devo's second album), and suddenly it's a pop song with heavenly choruses and heavy doses of ennui! it's complicated, like people and relationships and feelings, etc. etc.
i think about these things too much. but i see your points, these beginnings are challenging.

Not that I would consider them lame beginnings-but-in my opinion, many of the Cure's later works have intros that just seem never ending. Some of these songs would have been better without them.

IMHO Roxy Music's GEORGEOUS 'Take A Chance With Me' wastes the first ~1:08 or so with this loooong drawn out synth, guitar and DSOTM inspired drumming that I would definitely have left on the editing room floor.[|)]
