Jagged Rocks On The Perimeter (1986)

Jagged Rocks On The Perimeter released their LP, The Soldier And The Painter, in 1986.

eight6 posted one of their songs over a year ago and so I had to track down this Arizona based groups LP.

This reminds me a lot of Let's Active.

Hello everyone. I found this BBS while doing a search for "Jagged Rocks On The Perimeter"

My best friend since grade school is Scott Wilkinson, their lead guitar player and song co-writer. I knew all of them and saw them live many times. The Bass player, Tim Ferguson, is another good friend.

The Soldier and the Painter was not actually released on vinyl. They had planned to release it on vinyl and had all the jackets produced, but then ran short on funds.....so they released it on cassette, but shrink-wrapped the cassette to the LP jacket!

The band's main influence was a band from Australia, "The Church". Jagged Rocks played all their own music live, except a cover of "Unguarded Moment", by The Church.

The song that got all the airplay one the Key was "A City South". I remember hearing it about 4 times a day at it's peak.

I fondly remember the band, as well as the other great local bands of the time. The Strand ( former Jetzons members) did an incredible version of Eight Mile High ( The Byrds) live.

Lots of talent around the valley in those times.

Around 1988, Scott Wilkinson asked me to form another band with him. We drove to Tim Ferguson's house and asked if he was interested. The three of us wrote a bunch of new songs, but also covered original JROTP songs. We then got a GREAT drummer, Travis McNabb, at 17 years old.

Travis went on to much better things. Do a google search on him.

We played locally for as "Jagged Rocks" (Not Jagged Rocks on the Perimeter) couple of months, recorded two demos, got some radio play on "local 98" rock, then called it quits.

Jimmy Booth, the original singer was not part of this version. I met him at a party during this time, and he seemed annoyed that we had taken the name Jagged Rocks.

If anyone is interested, I could dig up some old demos and live practice recordings.

<edit> Jagged Rocks played a couple of Church songs, now that I think about it. Another was "Too Fast for You"

As far as the JROTP LP I posted, this one actually did make it out in vinyl, I have the vinyl. I believe it was their first one that the LP Jackets were all done but it was only released on cassette.

Okay, I have two shoe boxes full of tapes. I am going through them and transferring them to mp3.

This is Spirits and Ghosts, 1988, Jagged Rocks. A 17....maybe 18 year old Travis McNabb is on drums.

< dang, sorry for all the edits.... I cut some things on accident. This song was written by Tim Ferguson and he sings all of the parts.

It was recorded at my house on an 8 track analog tape machine, with a 16 channel board. The Drums and bass were recorded "live" and the rest was recorded on the other tracks.

This recording is taken from a 19 year old cassette tape.

Sadly, I threw out the master tapes a few years ago. >

Hey, I didn't know Jim was mad about us using the shortened Jagged Rocks name.... I don't blame him. Looking back, we probably should have gotten a new name.

So, do you or anyone else know how to get in touch with Jim and Tim?

Also, there is a guy in Cave Creek named Pete Zeeveld (maybe you remember I use to work with him at Posters Mostly. Anyway, I sold him my Yamaha SBG500 in order to get that Hamer guitar. I have been wanting to get in touch with him to see if I can get it back (if he still has it). I know it is in rough shape because I spray painted it red in 1987! Anyway, I have his phone number. Would you mind trying to follow up on this guy to see about the guitar?

This is amazing. I was searching online for Jagged Rocks on the Perimeter as well, and that's how I found this place. Then I downloaded the The Soldier and the Painter (I still think it should have been "A Soldier and A Painter, lol) from coop41's great azlocal website.

Thanks, it started out just reading an article about Arizona bands in New Times and has evolved. I have had a lot of contact with local musicians who love the site which makes it worthwhile.

coop, you are correct it was released on vinyl. My memory is failing me.

Having spoken with Scott tonight by phone, he reminded me that it was "Against A Darkened Sky" that was was released on cassette, shrink-wrapped to an LP jacket.

Here is a practice version of a song called "Here We Go" Around 1988.

It's sloppy (mostly me), but it's an interesting song, imo. This was a practice and all the guitars are just plugged into a mixing board and recorded direct, with the drum machine for a basic beat.
