Grumpy, I actually like you, and we've had some really productive exchanges. Please know that I'm being dead serious with my comments. There is a distinct problem here when you admit to being this so-called [i]user[/i] versus [i]contributor[/i]. You really are just chirping from the peanut gallery that the contributors aren't contributing enough for you, an admitted non-contributor. You're saying you want others to do more work for your benefit.

There's going to be noise in any forum. The only way a forum is going to be successful is if the signal gets higher than the noise, ie. more music contribution. The same people who make noise very often make a heck of a lot of signal. It sure as shit is way more than that .1% of your supposed 99.9%. That's just fucking insulting and idiotic. You're being a DISincentive for anyone to contribute more-so than urging anyone to do so. No one's going to argue that sometimes the noise gets too high or even beligerent. Blir I like you as well and do remember our exchanges, my aggravation is aimed at the comments I have seen lately that are just hurtful, nothing to do with music. What place do those type comments have here? When you try and engage in friendly exchange and some moron chimes in and throws insults for no reason. This stuff is really appropriate? It has nothing to do with the point of these forums and the music we love.

Maybe some of those exchanges aren't "for no reason". Have you considered that maybe there's other types of frustation building up here in addition to yours? I know one continuing theme is what's perceived to be the constant punishing onslaught of non-new wave music and generic 80s crap that some people choose to espouse here. Fine. Espouse it. But don't expect not to be hammered for it. That's seems to be the nature of MikeP's laissez faire doesn't it?

Overall though, if you were to extract out the non-music talk and leave behind only the music talk, I'd still bet you there's more engaging music talk here than there ever was in the past, if only just on sheer volume. Perception might not seem to indicate that, because I think most people hone in on the more dramatic aspects of this forum society just like in any real society, but I bet the reality is not so negative.

As usual with the drive by opining crowd, your non-investment here means your comments carry no weight (with me at least), and at most provide a bit of a chuckle to those willing to read them.

I most certainly agree with the frustrations in regards to some of the artists that have been brought up on the forums lately. There were two instances that set me off on the insults, neither of which had anything to do with the watered down posts that we both are now referring to. Maybe that onslaught of non-new wave music is also contributing to my overall feeling that these forums are not what they used to be.

Not that anyone asked, but this seems like a good thread to give my opinion of this site.
There are both pros and cons to being a member here. But that can certainly be said about any messageboard.

The Cons: I,too, find the constant squabling over what is new-wave enough for the board to be a little silly. The fact that 'new wave'is such an objective term makes many of the arguments just different opinions. Obviously, threads about Foreigner (like the one last month), are obviously outside of the genre that MikeP intended for this site, but those threads are easy enough to just ignore, rather than get all lathered up about them.

The Pros: This is the best board I've found for discussing 80's music, e specially new wave and power pop. The members on this board have more knowledge than anyone I've ever had the pleasure of chatting with. In my little neck of the woods, I always considered myself somewhat of an expert on all things 80's music. Well, I'll tell you what, I don't know a tenth of what many of these guys (and girls) know. It always amazes me when I post a song, or start a thread, about a group that I consider obscure- only to have a ton of responses with information that I never knew, and links to downloads that I never knew existed.
Like Blir mentioned, the members who sometimes seem to be the most combative, are also the members who seem to contribute the most. That's something that took me a while to notice. Hell, there have been numerous occasions where a member who had spent the previous day insulting and criticizing me, posts a download that I requested or replied favorably in a thread that I started. It doesn't seem that the old-timers are actually mean or nasty people, simply proud members who are 'defending their fort' or trying to make sure their little new wave clubhouse stays just that, and not a forum full of eighties top 40 discussion.

As someone mentioned earlier, stick around and make contributions. I think it's a lot easier to trust a newer member when it is obvious that the newbie is here to contribute as well as benefit from the site. It seems the most respected members here, both old and new, are the ones who constantly offer music to download and reply to other people's requests.
