Gary Myrick and The Figures

Do any of you guys own Gary's Myrick's first two albums (I think from 1980-81)? "She Talks In Stereo" is a great song, and has shown up on the occassional compilation cd. However, I have been curious about the rest of his output and would love to hear any thoughts.

There is a website that offers the two lps on one cd - you may recall our old friend Georgie Rockwell talking about picking it up. However I could never get a an answer out of Georgie on the following question: is the cd a legit reissue? It seems kind of odd that it's only on the website (although Cactus World News only seems to sell via their website as well). The albums were originally released on CBS/Epic if I recall.

Yeah, I thought about picking those cd's up from that site too and I even called them but they also couldn't verify that they were factory pressed cd's. I changed my mind about the order.

I have the "She Talks In Stereo" 45. The B side is a very cool song called "The Message Is You".

Amazon offers "Stand for Love", originally released in 1985.

Gary himself "sells" that CD (among other things) for a $30 donation on his own website. www.garymyrick.com I assume that's the one you're talking about. If not, well, that's where they originated from. As for the legality/legitness of it, that I have no idea. If he didn't legally buy back the rights from Epic, Epic doesn't seem to care.

Personally, if I were going to make a donation there, I'd throw my money at the "Language" CD. It's got a boatload of unreleased bonus tracks on it.

The Message Is You is an awesome, on my top 100 of all times. I actually don't mind paying $30 donation for that cd but would like to get a "factory pressed silver cd" version and not a cd-r. I already recorded my vinyl onto cd-r so there's really no need for another cd-r. If anyone has bought a copy and can provide me with the details, that would be great. Seems like a very simple question but never received a straight answer from anyone.

If you ever get the answer to whether it's legitimate, please let us know. I am skeptical but curious.

FYI - Don't feel bad about not getting an answer from Georgie. I always had the feeling that he, unexpectedly and without obvious cause, fell down often and hit his head. Kind of the old unassisted double play.

Anyhow, thanks for feedback and recommendations. I am with Sean...I am not into paying $30 for CDR's. The Cactus World News cds I mentioned are silver pressed and remastered by one of their original studio engineers, so I think those ones are for real even though they are only available on their website.

I will let you know if I find the story behind the Gary Myrick reissues...

Not that I want to get the website in trouble, but I wonder if the record company just doesn't find it worth their trouble to worry about it, or if they actually gave the website permission to crank out cdr's for "donations"?

Gary is releasing the CD's himself so he has the right to do what he wants with his music. He will also sign the CD's for you.

For me, I don't mind if he releases cd-r's but just let the buyer know what they are getting. I've bought cd-r's before for albums that were not commercially release and I am ok with it as long as I know that's what I'm getting. $30 (donation as it is called) though is too pricey for me for a cd-r. At that price, even a silver pressing is kind of pricey. Good luck to Gary and his ventures.

When I got the CDs from him, they weren't signed. But, one of them took a long time to get to me, so Gary included a handwritten note of apology and a CD-R of his 'new upcoming' album called "Vinylhead." This was at least four years ago, and I don't think that album ever came out.

I have "She Talks in Stereo" on a CD compilation called, "Heard it on the Radio, Vol 3" Ironically, I had only heard about six of the 18 songs on the CD on the radio, but not only did it have "She Talks in Stereo," it has the Hawks, "It's All Right, it's OK" and the Producers, "She Sheila" along with a few other good songs and a lot of filler.
