Yo. Long time. Yeah, when Kirk died, cinema lost one of the most iconic and significant hero warriors mythology had ever seen.

Aw, come on Wolvinator. Kirk was a magnanimous member of a long line of epic and mythic heroes of THE highest order. Even in death he served to save others, a key ingredient in the mythic hero recipe. To get the girl is as fundamental to this character's identity as it is to the knight who rescues the lady, the cowboy who rescues the damsel, the farmboy who rescues the princess, the secret agent who rescues the spy chick, etc. Put yourself in the green chick's shoes for a moment. What can be more appealng than a beefy, gentleman stud who nobly wanders space looking for some strife to settle. The man's got the power of a Constitution class starship at his fingertips and a crew that will die for him yet he STILL beams down to kick some ass revealing sweaty pecs and slightly tussled hair. The power of the Kirk knows no end. Men want to be him and women want to be WITH him. Face it Wolv. You know how much Captain James Tiberius I Was Once an Admiral But Needed to Get Back On A Bridge So They Made Me Captain Again Kirk RULES [8D]

Terms of Endearment. Same scene. Every time.
Gattaca. There's something about hope and longing and striving in that that gets me.

Well said, Marv (at least to this fanboy's ears). The question is will new casting for the upcoming Star Trek movie work in this regard. No one does bombast like Shatner. How will an anyone not look like a parody when compared to him?

Hutter, welcome back.

It sure is going to be strange seeing other actors play the Enterprise crew. But I'm glad it's being done as these are the stories I've been hungry for for over twenty years. I've always loved origin stories and am glad that the Hollywood fixation with them shows no sign of dying. Thanks George Lucas!

I don't know a thing about the new Kirk (Chris Pine) but Nimoy seems to give his nod of approval over the new Spock with great zeal:

Check out the pics of all the younger versions of the NCC-1701 crew. Isn't it pretty uncanny that they can find people who really look like younger versions of older people? They should do a New Wave movie where they redo concert snapshots from the early 80s [:D]

Warning-- Jacob's Ladder: spoilers ahead

In one of my favorite movies, Jacob's Ladder, while doctors try to save Jacob's life on a battlefield operating table in Viet Nam, his brain's misfiring synapses ricochet between a fantasy version of his life and the unbearable grief of his real one*. In his waning stream of consciousness, he returns home in the wee hours of the morning to find the house dark and still, the family asleep upstairs. When Jacob approaches the staircase leading to the bedrooms above, he is greeted by the vision of his young deceased son, Gabriel, a loss which the family never recovered. Sobbing, Jacob embraces his son. The boy comforts his Dad, and tugging his father's hand, the boy says "C'mon Dad." They ascend up the stairs, into the brightness of a dawning day.

This scene gets me every time. If you have young kids, I think, this scene resonates very powerfully.

The scene seamlessly cuts to the bright light of the operating table. Jacob's heart has stopped beating. His life has finally departed his body, and the doctors record the time of death and retrieve his dog-tag id from his neck.

Juxtaposed with the previous scene, it is a jarring, devastating end to the film. It leaves you reeling. In all, it's a great, great movie-- one of my favorites, directed by Adrian Lynne.

*Main theme of the movie as described by one of the characters: "If you're frightened of dying, you'll see devils tearing you apart. If you've made your peace, then they're really angels freeing you from the world.

Great movie.
