70 Cities As Love Brings The Fall!

This is a nonsensical post, really. I thought some of you would like to know that right now someone, somewhere in the world is cranking the Sons and Fascination LP at very high volume. I guess we could call this the Sons & Fascination/Sister Feelings Call Appreciation Thread. One of my favorite SM albums, and arguably their most creative.

I have the Virgin import CD double album (which I know is missing a track or two from the vinyl releases), and the highlights for me are (in no order):

70 Cities
Boys From Brazil
Theme For Great Cities
Wonderful In Young Life
Careful In Career

Almost a 'trancey feel' on some of the songs. Wish I'd caught them live during this period. Anyone else want to comment on these fine records? Who saw them live on this tour?

Awesome - I'd love to hear those mixes. I know I've heard the Fila mix of Themes (just checked the mixes folder, guess I don't have it), but definitely not the other two. So, that's the group Fluke mixing Themes?

Got on the Sons/Sisters kick recently, as I'm putting together a DJ compilation to apply for a job here in town. One of my female friends (who likes to dance), suggested..of all songs..Sweat In Bullet, and though it's certainly not mixed for the dance floor, is a good tempo for a club tune. I'm still on the fence about actually using it. It mixes in pretty well from Severed Heads' "Hot With Fleas" (I have a varied obscure 80's new wave/industrial mix going), but there's some bpm sync issues, and I'm starting to wonder if I should lean towards the 'punchier', better mixed songs like Once Upon A Time, or even New Gold Dream (avoiding Don't You at all costs).

I was at a club in Scottsdale a couple of weeks ago, and the DJ, while having a good taste in music, put together 4 hours of an incredibly stale set (usual suspects, Take On Me, The Promise, Just Like Heaven, Major Tom twice, SEVEN Depeche Mode songs, Head Like A Hole, and four songs skipped badly). I freelance DJ, but have been itching to get a good club gig for an alternative night. I have a great set going so far for my demo submission (gonna test it out on some friends first), which I'd like to post here at some point (probably just the tracklist, many of the songs are available). Anyway, back to SM, a Minds song OTHER than Don't You, Alive and Kicking, Sanctify, etc. will be in the set.. but it has to be a good one, dancey, and mixable, I suppose.

I'd have to say Changeling was always my favourite Simple Minds song in a club. It sounds so good loud.

Cool, I'll try that one when I get home from work. I listened to Premonition at some point last night, but didn't think of Changeling.

I'll throw my .02 in and say that 'I Travel' and 'Love Song' are 2 of my fave SM club trax.[8D]

Definitely work either (or both) of those into your demo playlist.[;)]

Absolutely my favorite SM album(s). There is something very mechanical about them. They remind me of Low/Heroes era David Bowie. Sometimes it sounds like Charlie Burchill is playing an electric saw or a snowmobile instead of a guitar. Sweat In Bullet, Boys From Brazil, Careful In Career, Seeing Out The Angel, 20th Century Promised Land.
I think between the odd time signatures and the mechanical sound to it, it really is unlike any other New Wave album I know.
I easily rank it in my top 10 favorite albums of the 80s.
It is amazing the shift from this to New Gold Dream which I also love but is a much more lush shounding record.
Maybe Sons and Fascination/Sister Feelings Call has a resonance that I feel driving around in the middle of winter in Canada.

the only other thing I could add, would to be to say, you haven't lived in Canada unless you walk through a snowy field at dusk with Rational Youths 'Cold War Nightlife' in your headphones....

seems like this is a "bootleg ---white label"? any info on the origins? seems pretty "cut and pasted" --still, an extra 5 min of a good song (even if it is just repeating itself) is ok by me....
