Leafs played a brutal game Tuesday night against Ottawa, played a good game last night in Buffalo, winning 3-0. Games in Buffalo are practically home games from the number of Leaf fans crossing the border. Leafs now have a 7-7-3 record.

Rangers visit the ACC tonight for the 2007 Hall of Fame game. This year's HHoF inductees include: Ron Francis, Jim Gregory (Builder category), Al MacInnis, Mark Messier and Scott Stevens. Inductions will take place on Monday.

That's a really strong group! Nice to see that it really is the Hall of Fame this year, not the Hall-of-Pretty-Good or the Hall-of-Just-Better-Than-Average-But-Played-In-A-Major-Market.

I thought some of you hockey fans may get a kick out of this - Guy LaFleur's album from 1979. It's about half way down the page. http://discodelivery.blogspot.com/

This may rival Ethel Merman's album....

Best goal minus the circus tricks was Datsyuk's...great timing, balance and skill involved there.

O.K., so we’re just about half way through the season, and it’s looking really good.

Things are playing out just about the way that you would expect in a league with a (relatively) hard salary cap. The gap between teams at the top and the bottom has narrowed considerably. As a result at the half way point there is really only one team (out of thirty) that is really out of contention for a playoff position (see ya next year Kings!).

There have been a few teams that have really surprised me (on the upside!). I thought Phoenix would be memorably (expansion team) bad, but they have been respectable. The kids in Chicago have the Blackhawks playing really fun-to-watch hockey (the best game I have seen all year was Detroit/Chicago, real up-and-down, free skating game!).

The Sens have been solid in the East, but I sure wouldn’t call them dominant (even if the 9 points they lead the second place Devils by are more than separate 15th place from 5th). More proof that hockey is a team game; the teams that are out-of-the playoffs in the East have some of the best individual players (or at least scorers). This does not seem to be the case in the West.

I’m guessing that Buffalo & Pittsburgh will start to move up in the second half in the East. In the West, San Jose might learn to play at home, and Anaheim and Calgary will settle in.

It has been interesting hearing the talk about HD being good for the NHL, as the speed of the game will really be presented well (and non-fans might be able to follow the puck).

There are (of course) a few things that could really be improved as the playoffs approach:

1) More diving penalties should be called. Sigh, in some games it is just ridiculous
2) Maybe this is related to above, but inconsistent refereeing from game to game. You watch one game and it is a return to “old time hockey” the Hanson brothers would have been at home in, the next game a penalty is called every time a player falls down. Must be driving the players crazy!
3)Whining about the salary cap in a small market town. Some people here in Ottawa seem to think that now the Sens have a deep pockets owner that they would have been able to keep all of their players, forgetting that in a non-cap world certain deep pockets, large market, teams would already have payrolls well over $100 million and the NHL would be headed into the same idiocy as MLB. Of course it would be nice the Sens could have been given a mulligan for choosing Redden over Chara.

All-in-all, really looking forward to the second half!

1) Soccer On Ice
2) Plagues all sports

Might I suggest ways to improve:
1) Let every team qualify for the playoffs. (Oops, they already do)
2) Play a game outside
3) Use modern technology to help me follow the puck on TV, maybe a streak or something like that.
4) Put a game or two on TV

As far as Phoenix is concerned, I think it's easy to say they are respectable, unfortunately, it seems like we are in our 10th "Re-building" year under Gretzky. Picking up Bryzgalov is the only reason we are respectable. Attendance is way down. The only excitement would be if Wayne laced 'em up again.

Man, I missed that outdoor game between PIT and BUF. 10:00AM Pacific. As if I'm waking up that early on New Year's Day to watch it. Forgot that it was even on. And it's not being rebroadcasted on CBC later tonight, as they do with Saturday games.

It was actually quite entertaining, although the weather conditions (which was so cool!) made it even more difficult to see the puck at times. Crosby is such a sweet player. How cool was that he gets the game winner in a shootout as well, a fitting end to the game.

I caught a few minutes of this one, just because I wanted to see what the weather conditions were like. Looked like fun!

Unfortunately though I gave up my available TV time to my kids in order to watch the Sens/Caps game later that afternoon. Great move that was...

Crosby is a great player, but I'm not sure that there is any player, on any team, in any professional sport, that can really look good in a powder blue uniform.

If only there were a way to make the puck show up on TV with a red or blue comet tail so that you could see it better.... [:p]
