With The Day After Thanksgiving upon us, here's a sobering and award winning PBS documentary on the credit card industry. Something to think about before you slap that plastic on the counter.

Saw that program on PBS when it came out... I taught this workshop class last night: "Understanding Your Personal Credit History." Why such the long title, I can't call it "Credit Repair," or "How Not to Get Ripped Off by the Credit Industry" because I could be sued if I did!

Anyway, another great program (and you'll get sad watching it) is "In Debt We Trust" documentary, which I saw on LinkTV (DirecTV Ch. 375), and TiVo-ed it to show sometime in a lecture, as part of a PowerPoint presentation.

Does anyone else *not* use credit cards? At the BMG Casa, we operate with the understanding that if you can't go pay cash for something, then you just don't need it.

I keep one and have it set up to auto-pay all my other bills each month (insurance, cell, dish etc). Then I pay the whole balance off at the end of the month. No worries, no interest. If I buy something, I use either cash or my debit card.

Excellent way to pay bills, and pay off the cedit card; I hope your getting points/rebate/miles on that card!?

I just completed a 12 page brochure for a class I teach on credit repair and raising your FICO scores and understanding the importance of good credit. If anyone is interested , shoot me an e-mail, I'd be happy to send you a copy as soon as the new batch is printed.

I totally agree. I didn't get my one card until a few years ago, because I needed to rent a car and you can only rent a car with credit cards--not debit cards--nowadays. Also, we put our plane tickets on the card. That's it. However, besides that, I strongly feel that if you don't have the cash for something, you don't need it. If you really want something expensive, start saving up for it. p.s. I also have to add that motor's MO isn't bad; that's responsible use.

OMG, a Kotter joke - my husband used to tell people our last name means "the cattle are dieing." No one seems to remember the beloved Arnold Horshach ...

Seriously though, we have only one credit card that we pay off completely every month - no interest, no hassles as mentioned above. We use it because it does have "reward" perks ... and it's easier than carrying alot of cash around.
