I tend to reject statements like this only because it goes back to the morality being subjective thing. The world was a pretty barbaric place way back when. I don't think it's reasonable to judge the acts of past societies by today's standards. Learn from them? Sure. But hold a philosophical grudge against a centuries old period in history? Nah. It starts to get a little obtuse to me. The world's come a long way since then.

I'll agree with you... to a point. I guess I have a grudge against the catholic faith *ahem* I mean, I DO have a grudge against the Catholic Church (not the faith) that goes back to Paul, Thomas Aquinas, and Augustine. That a lot of the Church's views and actions are to this day based on the influences of those men makes me hostile. The world certainly has come a long way, but we aren't "there" yet, baby! [;)]

Heh, I'll agree with that too but surely you can agree whole-heartedly that the Catholic Church is hardly on top of the list of backwards religions.

Oooooh, that's a tough one. Marv, you're making my brain hurt! LOL I'm tempted to concede that you're right, that the Catholic church is NOT at the top of the list; however, I'm a contrary person by nature. (Just in case you never noticed.) So I'm also tempted to say that it's possible that the Catholic Church is indeed at the top of the list, but only because it has just soooo much more finesse than other backward religions. Just food for thought. In all actuality, I tend to agree with you. (But I'd still keep them on that list!)

The whole "like" thing kills me, too. On the one hand, it's teen slang that has crept into the lexicon, and language constantly shifts and changes, even including forms of slang. OTOH, if one just LISTENS to all the "likes", it's funny. What gets me is the substitution of [i]she says[/i] with [i]she's like[/i]:

"So I tell her what he did behind her back, and then she's like [i]no way! Get out![/i], and I'm like [i]are you surprised?[/i], and she's like [i]hell no![/i] and I'm like...."

that's a stupid example but you get my point.

Hmmm, that goes right back into the morality as subjective clause. I don't see a contrary nature as a "problem". I see it as a way to stimulate people to look at facets of concepts that they may not have otherwise considered. A "Devil's Advocate" so to speak. Of course you can live with people like me in the world (and by the way, thank you so much for making it clear that by your vastly superior nature you deem my presence tolerable- that's a joke, btw. lol). Otherwise, we'd all be lemmings and no one would stop and say, "Hey, why are we doing this? Is it possible there's another way? Who made the head lemming the boss of all of us anyway? Why can't I go my own way?" I suspect there's a little contrariness in your own nature as well. [;)][:)]

Since I'm the one who taught you that morality is subjective and because I subsequently said that I can live with people like you in the world, I see no reason to really get as heated as you are. The "problem" is really just your opinion and again, like I said before, it's like an asshole. Nobody doesn't have one and therefore, I can live with all of them if I am indeed entitled to my own. It's too bad you can't live with mine or certain others. Now get over your feisty self. It's just an internet forum. I guess the [i]problem[/i] (for you) with your "problem" is that it's just so beyond the mainstream that it gets little attention. But I guess for you to be so beyond the mainstream you need a little bit of a superiority complex of your own.

The worst thing for me is loud gum chewers! These people who cannot keep their mouth shut while they chew their gum! The worst ones are the people who make that popping sound in their cheek like their constantly popping bubbles. I freakin hate that sound! AARRGG!

Also people who insist on opening up their cell phone in the movie theater.. I don't know what they're doing.. texting, checking the time, whatever, but do they really need to open their phone every five minutes?

My goodness, I must have hit a nerve. You did not, in fact, teach me that morality is subjective, you merely used it as a platform for one of your arguments. Furthermore, I am not "heated". I thought we were just having an interesting debate. I was- and still am- having fun. Indeed, I actually agreed with you on some points. I never stated that I couldn't live with someone else's opinion. To the contrary, I intimated that I respect other people's opinions, even if I don't agree with them. If my- no, is that your?- problem gets so little attention, then why do you keep conversing with me? If I were getting so little attention we wouldn't have made it to this number of posts on the issue. I have nothing against the mainstream, I'm just not a lemming. If that makes me superior to lemmings, then I guess life could be worse.
