Funny, but this has always annoyed me. Reggae music is fine, I just have never understood the need or connection for New Wave and/or Alternative stations to include it in their playlists like it was some sort of cultural requirement. After reading all the suggestions, maybe I know now.

After reading through all these posts, I wonder where reggae's influence is in the musical landscape now?

Seems to come from the early days when punk was new in UK, the DJs or soundboard guys would be playing reggae music between bands... maybe something to do with the skinheads/smoothies/sudeheads...???

No where on the radar screen so to speak, or are any of the new "indie"/alternative bands being influenced by the Jamaican musical export?

To followup Glokstadt's point, even Bob Marley has a tune called "Punky Raggae Party" which calls out a bunch of punk bands by name. And didn't Lee "Scratch" Perry get involved producing some Clash stuff?

I also don't understand why alternative stations play it though...the ones I've heard only play the light stuff like Bob Marley's "Three Little Birds". I would guess it wasn't raggae light that inspired the punks in the day...play something with some kick!

from the Don Letts entry in the Wikipedia (and is exactly what he said when I saw him in person about a year ago at the Brooklyn Academy of Music)

Letts worked as a DJ in the Roxy, a London nightclub during the original outbreak of punk in England. As few bands of that era had yet recorded, there were limited punk rock records to be played. Instead, Letts included many dub and reggae records in his sets, and is credited with introducing those sounds to the London punk scene, which was to influence The Clash and other bands. As a tribute, he is pictured on the cover of the album Super Black Market Clash.

That's funny...as I'm reading through marvymarv's comments about the reggae influence, I was going to mention Don Letts. And, since he has come to mind, let's not forget Basement 5, a band that Don Letts was a part of at the start.

There is still a very active Ska scene, and you can throw in retro-punk bands like Clashmaniacs Rancid.

Steel Pulse and Musical Youth got a lot of play on alternative stations but were actual reggae bands. I think what is being asked here is genuine (more or less) new wave bands that were influenced by reggae.

(Love Steel Pulse, btw!)
