Wonder why Miss South Carolina has problems?

Maybe it's in the water, but I'm wondering if it's a state-wide edumacation issue.

From the Charleston Post and Courier:

"Couple arrested outside mall
Staff report
Tuesday, December 11, 2007

North Charleston police said they found $9,135.73 worth of stolen Victoria's Secret merchandise after they chased a couple out of Northwoods Mall to their car Saturday.

Two officers working an off-duty assignment at the mall said they saw a man and woman running through the mall toward the exit. The officers chased the two to a Toyota Camry in the parking lot, a report said.

The merchandise was in the back seat, a report said. The woman had $1,714 in her possession and the man was carrying $551, officers said. Police also found in the glove box a list of Aeropostale stores in South Carolina.

Police arrested Roberto Elier Padilla-Santiago, 20, of Charlotte and JoAnna Fernandez, 22, of Queens, N.Y., on charges of grand larceny and possession of stolen goods."

Why? It sounds like 2 people, one from NC and the other from NY, going (or planning to go) shoplifting at multiple malls.

They have problems counting past ten.

Either that or there's a $6,870.73 "finder's fee".

I guess I just assumed there was already thousands of dollars worth of stolen Victoria's Secrets merchandise already in the back seat of the car.

The article didn't say which store the pair had run out of. It only stated how much cash they had on them.

Maybe they were returning the previously stolen lingerie for cash refunds.

Then again, maybe I should be from South Carolina because I'm way off base.

I read the article the same way as you, Dave. The $1714 and $551 is the cash the accused were carrying on them, and the $9000+ is the value of stolen goods already in the car.

Okay, a few points I must post:
1. It wasn't the "out of towners" I was critiquing, it was the way the article was written.
2. Having re-read it, I see what NuWaveDave and Plagiarism are saying.
3. It must be in the water, and I'd better switch to bottled.
4. I will never post in the wee hours of the night again, after 6 hours of hard-core studying for a final exam.

Oh, OK,
plagiarism stated what I was thinking, too. The money they found on the pair was ADDED to the value of the merchandise that was found in the back seat. Total=over $9,000.00.
