Hmph. What a sprawling 3 hrs. that was ! Man, it went on forever! If you find yourself looking at the clock during a movie, or pushing the "time" button on the remote to see how much time is left, well, that can't be a good sign. The movie was OK if you just watched it for pirate/sea/villainry action, but I lost track right from the beginning [i]re[/i] who was whom and who was doublecrossing whom, among other things. Also, the characters didn't have the charm as they did in the first one. BUT! I thought the Keith Richards cameo was TOO COOL ! heh.

<p align="justify">Just polished off a 2.5 hour flick by Paul Verhoeven from 2006 called "The Black Book." I have to say, I was more than impressed with the crew's work. The movie had a little bit of everything: action, suspense/thrills, drama, good music and cinematography, good acting, excellent sets and costumes. I was amazed to find out the final budget was 16 million Euros (it looked like it costs $100 mill, easy). I think it's only downside - for an average movie-viewer - is its running time of 2.5 hours, but the pacing never slows down. This is what blockbuster directing is all about. Fuck that michael bay shit and get to the Verhoeven stuff pronto[}:)]

Just saw I Am Legend tonight. A lot of Will and his dog in the same vein as Cast Away with Tom and wilson. It was so so not bad not great.

Just finished Music and Lyrics with Drew Barrymore and Hugh Grant. It was predictable Hollywood love story drek but I put it on as I was hoping for some laughs with eighties spoofs. It's a story about an eighties pop star has been who finds an unexpected love interest while rejuvenating his career. The "period" video of Hugh Grant's character's hit single is hilarious - it just about hits every video cliche of the day. And all the Long Island references struck home for this proud resident. Plus all the NYC scenes? [i]Fuhgedaboutit[/i] [8D] Fellow Strong Islanders take note: there's a whole section of the film that takes place at Adventureland. Mrs. Marv and I were laughing.....we had our daughter's last birthday party there [^]

Just finished "13 Tzameti" - a French film that won the Grand Jury prize at Sundance. Pretty intense thriller about a guy who assumes a dead-man's identity. Rented it from Blockbuster video (or as it's called in the Gately household, CockBlister video).

I rented the movie "Once" last night-- the Irish indie flick with the frontman from the Frames.

It was a bit thin on storyline and dialog, but it was still a pretty great musical movie. Highly recommended.

Just watched a czech oddity from 1966, "The End of August at the Hotel Ozone". I'm not big on foreign language films, but for a military funded post-armageddon flick made behind the iron curtain, it's pretty good.

I have directv with all the movie channels and sometimes I like to just pick something I've never even heard of (even better if I've never heard of anyone in the cast) and just watch it. Tonight I found a complete masterpiece doing this.

<p align="justify">Just finished off another Luchino Visconti epic, "Rocco And His Brothers." It's 3 hours, but the pacing is fast, so it doesn't [i]feel[/i] that long, although I'm sure one could watch it one hour a day and get the whole movie. Either way, I recommend it in spite of the fact the dvd is crappy and the aspect ratio is fucked up. Last night, I watched "When A Woman Ascends The Stairs," directed by Naruse Mikio. I felt sad watching the denouement. I guess I must be getting old when I let this shit get to me[}:)]


I bought [i]Ernest Hemingway's The Killers[/i], a film noir from 1946 starring Burt Lancaster, [i]Brute Force[/i], another film starring Burt Lancaster, and [i]Dazed And Confused[/i]. That last one was the "free" movie I got at the Border's "buy 2, get 1 free" sale[}:)]
