My mom was, like whereweuin82's mom, a big Motown proponet, only she didn't like the Stones or The Beatles or any guitar-based pop/rock group; she preferred easy listening (e.g. Perry Como) or 1960 and beyond era R&B, e.g. the aforementioned Motown, Gamble & Huff/Philly sound stuff, etc. So the very first music memory I have is getting into one of Mom's Motown singles, "Bernadette" by The Four Tops. Soon thereafter I remember listening to oldies radio (what my parents listened to) and being blissed out by The Doors, which is where my mom's tastes and my tastes began to diverge. Another early memory is bonding with my dad over old movies, including biopics on the big band greats; my dad was interested in this because he loved big band and would watch movies such as The Glenn Miller Story any time he saw them on the cable TV schedule. So I got introduced to big band from a very early age and remember being keenly aware of songs such as "Pennsylvania-65000". And then there were the expected 45s of children's nursery rhymes I had in my own little record collection and played on my Fisher Price record player along with the aforementioned Motown/Stax/Volt-type singles. BTW, all of this took place in the '80s, roughly around 1983 and beyond. Prior to that year I don't think I was old enough to fully absorb music or have music memories.
