It just seems weird that most of my friends are now 10+ years younger than me. Most of the old friends I've had are now settled down with family and don't go out any more.

Then again I went to a show last night and I was one of the young ones there. It's just really strange to see people in their 50's still rocking out when, as kids, our parents seemed really old at 35.

My concern is still there about going from being "that cool guy who's been around forever" to "that old guy who really should just give it up". Kind of like the parents in the movie "Valley Girl"

I'm 36 but I really don't feel like it.. alot of people think I'm around 30 so usually I just let them believe it. But, last week I went to my girlfriend's family's Christmas dinner and out of the 20 or so people there, I was the third oldest. DAMMIT!

You guys should be happy. I went to a senior new years eve party today. It was at 11 a.m. sharp! If you ever want to feel young go to a senior new years eve party. You can tell by the looks on their faces that they know most won't see the party next year (if you know what I'm sayin).

Where I work, I'm considered the "creepy old guy" because of 2 young hillbilly girls. Thanks to them I no longer converse with anyone younger than me which turned me into the "old snob in the lab". You just can't win.

Forget teenage angst, 40-45 has got to be the most difficult age bracket to claw your way through. The kids are finally in school and you start to have free time again and one day you wake up and really talk to your wife for the first time in 5 years and realize you have nothing in common anymore. She's having a fling with her personal trainer and you have to decide whether you can forgive her or throw away 10+ years of marriage. Your once promising career suddenly hits a wall when you are overlooked for a promotion in favour of some 35 year old whiz kid. You come to realize younger women still find you sexy...but do you act on it...after all, soon you'll be 50 and surely this is your last chance with the ladies. You give in and seek solace in the arms of that pretty secretary at work one night and suddenly she's pregnant and suing you for child support! To top it off, you can't drink beer anymore because it is too filling, your blood pressure is high so you have to avoid salty food and your cholesterol level means whatever other good food is left to eat is taboo as well.

These are all things happening to my friends. I'm not sure how many of them are going to make it through. Depressing times.

When I was 38 I was forced into a sort of 3-week sabbatical. It was the only time since university I had 3 weeks of time alone, away from family and work responsibilities, and it proved to be a great time for reflection. A turning point in my life. I figured out what was important and what was just noise. If you are honest with yourself, you can make it through the mid-life crisis without all the drama.

Tomorrow is the big day. I'm throwing myself a party at First Avenue (actually the 7th Street Entry, the side room). My band is playing, the band that used to be The Hypstrz is playing, and my other 2 favorite local bands are playing.

What happens and how I feel about life on Saturday may be a whole different story, but tomorrow night I'm gonna party like it's 1999 (and I'm 31 again!)

Well... consider the source. You say they're "hillbilly girls" -- as far as I know, that would mean they'd come from families where it wouldn't be unusual to have fortysomething grandparents back at home in the trailer park, with leathery, wizened faces, "teeth" that are actually dentures, family trees that do not fork, dubious literacy rates, and roofs on their single wides that are patched up with duct tape. So, you know, thank God you're not a part of their genetic cesspool. And get out there and talk... preferably with non-hillbilly types.

Edit to say: Ollie Stench, hope you have teh most awesomest time evah! And make your entry into your forties rock harder than any birthday you've had prior to that.

The average age of the people where I work would have to be around half my age (hell, my boss is half my age). I love talking to people but that whole "hillbilly" thing really soured my wanting to talk to people. I pretty much keep to myself, listen to my station, do my work, go home and enjoy the time I have away from people. I'm a modern day hermit!

Seriously though, I've seen a few similar scenarios play out (although many of them didn't wait for the 40s).

Pesky aging process, everybody talks about it, but nobody does anything about it.
