Glad to see Mike's response--as I'd feel that a cumulative list of all of our favorites without the inclusion of well-known regular, Glok's, would definitely not be a real list! :)

And the results are in! I received 36 submissions, a few with less than a full 100 songs submitted.

I opted to use the fairly straightforward scoring system below for song rankings:

1 = 8 points
2-5 = 7 points
6-10 = 6 points
11-20 = 5 points
21-30 = 4 points
31-40 = 3 points
41-50 = 2 points
51-100 = 1 point

There were definitely some surprises and I can definitely see that for us connoisseurs, much of the standard radio fare like "Sweet Dreams Are Made of This", "Our House", "She Blinded Me with Science" and "Anarchy in the UK" was shunned entirely. In other cases, big hits were ranked lower than other album cuts and even b-sides - for example, The Human League's "Don't You Want Me" was trumped significantly by "Seconds".

For you number-crunchers like Blir or Enzfan, <a href="../samples/temp/TopSongs2007.csv">click here</a> to grab a CSV file of the submissions (member, rank, artist, song) so you can illuminate us with further in-depth analysis.

So without further ado, here are the Top 106 (all those with a score of 14 or higher). Due to the weaker turnout, there tend to be a lot of ties once the score gets down to 20.

<TABLE style="font-size:11px"><tr><td>Artist</td><td>Song Title</td><td>Score</td><td>Count</td></tr><TR><TD>Joy Division</TD><TD>Love Will Tear Us Very cool Miguel! There are some surprising rankings. The biggest one to me is Simple Minds' "New Gold Dream" easily trumping both "Promised You a Miracle" and "Someone Somewhere in Summertime".

There's a couple of tallies that don't look quite right. It looks mostly due to weird parsing of symbols like apostrophes or spelling:

Smiths - There Is a Light That Never Goes Out - had a couple of misspellings that seems to take it to 46 points and far higher in the poll.

Wire Train - Chamber of Hellos - ditto above and thus creeps into the list at 17 points.

INXS - Don't Change - goes even higher to 34 points.

Blancmange - Don't Tell Me - 15 points and sneaks into the list with one extra #3 ranking.

Berlin - Sex (I'm a...) - 15 points, ditto to above but with 2 and 3 points more.

U2 - New Year's Day - squeezes 2 more points to 17.

The Human League - Don't You Want Me - gets into the list at 17 points but still gets trumped by Seconds.

All-in-all, pretty good rook. [;)] And big thanks of course.

PS. I've dug up the cumulative tables for 2005 and 2006. 75 unique participants (including glok and some oldies)! Bwaaahahahahahah!!!!

Very nice. A big thanks, as always, to everyone who took the time to compile and analyize the date. Now, Mike--do we have a 2008 t-shirt?[:p]

It's probably the single quote/apostrophe issue (’ vs. ') that frequently turns up based on whether the list was created in a word processor or plain text editor. Thanks for noticing this.

Blir's top two end up as the top two in the poll?

I call foul!

Well anyway, no badmouthing anyone who ends up with a high correlation to the consensus in your tree diagram.

Or maybe everyone is just swayed by Blir's opinions. Or vice versa.

No Devo or Police in the top 100? Harsh, just harsh. I suppose some disagreement over the best song by these bands is partly to blame. I'd love to see the data broken out by band. The same point system could be used with each song going toward the band's total.

Again 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' with a commanding victory (22 pts seperating #1 + #2 !!!), ...biggest shock : Modern English "Melt With You" with a poor showing....I like the results. thanks for doing the hard work Mike.

Well thanks fro the kind words Waldnorm; however, too late as usual, no computer access dampens my mood daily, I'm at a local hotel lobby using the "free" computer Internet access... and yielding to anyone waiting to use the terminal, as I'm hogging it up! I wonder if the staff is tired of seeing me over and over again, and that I've been staying here for overe two weeks now or what!? Maybe they can't tell... I'll see when I get the 'boot!' Heh, heh! [:D]

Edit: Besides, I don't know if my contribution would make a huge difference...
