I worked for Pactel Cellular for a while when I got out of the service. Big huge phones!! But back then they were as cool as heck!

I remember reading a story about how those super-old school cell phones were getting better reception than their modern counterparts in remote areas. This was just before analog service was stopped altogether.

I still remember that line from the ill-fated [i]The 80s Show[/i] where this character was all excited about his new portable phone. "And it's only EIGHT BUCKS a MINUTE!!"

That looks like the first Nokia cell phone I had installed in my car way back in '88. The base unit was installed under the seat, and gave off enough heat to make your ass sweat.

I'm fairly certain the rate was 65 cents a minute, plus the monthly network cost. I remember having bills in excess of $300.00.

Cost of the phone- $1,500.00 + installation...what the fuck was I thinking.

And it was the size of a football!

I still miss that show. FOX cancelled everything that year, unfortunately.

For fans of bad horror flicks, "Mountaintop Motel Massacre" features one of the earliest depictions of one of these car phones. Although it sat on the shelf until '86, it was filmed in '83. Of course, the thing is gigantic.

In about 1980 I got the newest French cooking thing of the moment - Le Saucier! It was a nonstick pan on a hot plate with a stirring mechanism coming up through the middle of the pan and hot plate. It cooked and stirred.

I looked it up to see if I could find a picture and was surprised to see it still exists.
