* Isn't it odd that most of the bands listed totally suck? Maybe bands with lousy names that are good are exceptions to the rule.

p.s. Rotator - Leaving Trains actually had a couple of decent albums, believe it or not. Inspiral Carpets, too.

OMG, Kitchens Of Distinction -- I think they're pretty awesome in a dreampop/jangle rock kinda vein. Seriously, do try their music out.

Am a huge fan of Kissing The Pink -- more dance-pop than anything, though it's interesting their most well known song (at least according to me) is kinda moody/goth ("Watching Their Eyes").

For Squirrels is one of those tragic stories that comes around once in awhile -- interesting alt-rock group on the cusp of fame and success ends up in an accident that kills off half its band and, thus, its band as a whole. It tries to move on from it but can't.

Curiosity Killed The Cat were the last musical artist to be championed by Andy Warhol, i.e. he championed them shortly before his 1987 demise. He directed and co-starred in the video for their song "Misfit". He mentions them in his Diaries -- calls them "cute kids", which is high praise.

Strawberry Switchblade were total tweepop from Scotland. Their appearance fooled me into believing they'd be tough girl dancepop in the vein of Siouxsie-meets-Madonna, but their music is really all about fluffy happiness and rainbows. Possibly the '80s precursor to Belle & Sebastian.

Curiously enough, I avoid Belle & Sebastian, partly because of their name, but also partly because their fan base is something I've encountered in small doses and have found to be, well, they ain't you guys, let's just put it that way. I also avoided Pere Ubu, purely because of their name though, though part of me looked at the band's Dave Thomas and was, like, "How can I like a band with someone like *him* fronting it?" i.e. a big mountain man type. But then I heard a Pere Ubu song (about 3 years ago) and totally liked it! So that showed me.

I myself am reticent to try out I'm So Hollow, though I love a band closely associated with them (B-Movie -- the two lead singers were best friends), purely because of their name. So that's a new name to the list.

Pere Ubu. I never knew what it meant but I sure do love them! I never thought of the name as being weird either, but I guess that means I must be pretty weird, huh?

Hmmm, I can't think of 80s bands which I avoided based on their name.

But in the (late) 90s, with the preponderance of names such as Hootie & the Blowfish, I knew just by hearing such a name that that band was gonna suck, and I completely tuned them out. To my mind, they were all lumped into what I call Big Head Hootie & the Counting Travellers Band. This is the closest I've come to [b]hate[/b].

LOL, welcome to my teenaged "VH1's 'Crossroads'" years. Except I actually [i]liked[/i] Counting Crows -- still kinda do, in fact. And Blues Traveler weren't [i]that[/i] bad to my ears. But Hootie? I only liked them when their video was strictly late night low rotation on MTV only; after that point, I recognized their inherent drunken frat boy suckitude. But by the late '90s I had had enough and just would not, could not like Hoobastank, Creed, Matchbox 20, etc.

Going back a bit, I remember intentionally snubbing Ben Folds Five because I thought, again going by the name, that they'd su-u-u-u-uck. And Pavement; I was, like, dudes, that is the least inspired band name ever, and thank God I did because it turns out they ripped off The Fall note by note, at least according to Mr. Mark E. Smith himself. Oh, and Ween was another '90s band I stayed the eff away from because of their band name. But then I went and fell in love with The Breeders and their band name was/is a little suspect, and God help me, I liked that one Primus song, and, well, we're all teenagers once, aren't we?

Ok, first off, I don't think KOD are "whispy crap" -- I think their sound is ethereal and dreamy and lovely and perfect for afternoons such as these, lovely sunny but cool Sunday afternoons where the minutes just hang there and all you want to do is lie back with a glass of cool iced tea or water, some great fiction, and music that will lift you up. Er, all this would be according to the book of me, that is. Second, I swear to God I have seen with my own eyes an interview with the godlike Mark E. Smith where he growls at Pavement for ripping The Fall off "note by note", so even if I had liked them before (and, truth be told, "Cut Your Hair" was pretty unavoidable for a spell sometime in the mid '90s), I would have thought less of them after reading that bit. But then again, this is due to my burgeoning Fall fandom and you yourself may not be that attached to that band, so hey, it's all about personal preference, you know?

For some odd reason I thought "The Cranberries" was a really stupid name and, despite their rising fame, I consciously avoided hearing them. Of course I ended up liking them but it took me a while to open myself up to giving them a fair shake.

Kitchens..whispy crap? Come on! Top 5 band for me. "Drive That Fast" is one of the best songs ever. Such a great, criminally underrated band. I put them in the same league as The Chameleons and The Smiths. I was fortunate to see them twice in concert. People who have never heard the albums Strange Free World and The Death of Cool are just flat-out missing out on some great songs.
